bad guy
Freddie Mercury Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let's go chasing rainbows in the sky
It's my invitation
Let's all take a trip on my ecstasy

I'm Mr bad guy, yes I'm everybody's Mr bad guy
Can't you see I'm Mr Mercury
Oh, spread your wings and fly away with me
Your big daddy's got no place to stay
Bad communication
I feel like the President of the USA

Mr bad guy, yes I'm everybody's Mr bad guy
Can't you see I'm Mr Mercury
Oh, spread your wings and fly away with me

I'm Mr bad guy, they're all afraid of me
I can ruin people's lives
Mr bad guy, they're all afraid of me
It's the only way to be
That's my destiny
Mr bad guy, Mr bad guy, bad guy

It's the only way for me
It's my destiny, oh yeah

Mr bad guy, yes I'm everybody's Mr bad guy

Can't you see this is my destiny
Oh, spread your wings and fly away with me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Freddie Mercury's "Mr Bad Guy" appear to be written from the perspective of a character who sees themselves as the archetypal bad guy - a person who enjoys being perceived this way, and possibly even relishes in their negative reputation. The first verse of the song invites listeners to follow the singer on a journey to "chase rainbows in the sky," using the metaphor as a representation of an inner state of bliss or ecstasy. This is followed by the chorus, where the singer introduces themselves as "Mr Bad Guy," and suggests that they are everyone's bad guy.

In the second verse, the lyrics refer to the singer's lack of place to stay (possibly projecting a sense of homelessness), and a state of "bad communication" which adds to their frustration. The phrase "I feel like the President of the USA" is a curious one, and could either be a reference to a sense of power and authority that the singer is feeling, or a suggestion that even the President of the United States may feel disadvantaged by bad communication in some way. The subsequent chorus reiterates the singer's identity as a bad guy, and the fact that they enjoy the role.

The final lines of the song suggest that being a bad guy is the only way for the singer, and is their destiny. It's possible that this song expresses the frustration of being placed in a "bad guy" role in life, and feeling that there is no other option available. Alternatively, the lyrics could represent a kind of celebration of this identity - being a bad guy is not necessarily negative, but is instead a source of pride and joy for the singer.

Lots of people say this album was a flop but i just can't agree with them. Too many people expected Queen sounding music instead of keeping an open mind. I love this song and the album!

@kecapmanis4191
