My Cousin
Frida Hyvönen Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Wonder where, wonder how, wonder who.
And then she got married to another man
Again a love and new.
Now they have 3 girls spreading their light in the world
I sleep in their guestroom sometimes
When I pass through town.
I'm not the marrying kind, and neither are you
To ask you, if we were the marrying kind
Would it be my hand you'd ask for?
Would you be the dad of the children I most likely won't have?
Is that how much you like me? Or is it not even close?
Oh, I know my question doesn't make sense at all
Since we live outside the realms of yes and no
I know my question doesn't make sense at all
But, I know somehow I need I need to know
I know my question doesn't make sense at all
Since we live outside the realms of yes an no
I know my question doesn't make sense at all
But,I know somehow I need I need I need I need I need I need I need to know.
In "My Cousin," Frida Hyvönen reflects on marriage and the human need for companionship in a story about her cousin's three marriages. The lyrics capture Frida's sense of wonder and curiosity over the idea of marriage and the possibility of building a life with someone else. She muses over the significance of her cousin's marriages and the love that brought her back to the altar again and again.
As the song progresses, Frida's introspection turns towards her own life and relationship with the person she's addressing. She acknowledges that they both are not naturally inclined or interested in marriage, yet wonders if there's a possibility that they could be the kind of person the other would marry, if the situation were different. She poses the hypothetical question about whether or not they would want to have children, and if they would consider building a life together.
Throughout the song, there's a sense of longing and desire for connection, even as the realities of life and personal inclinations make it seem unlikely. The repetition of the phrase "I know my question doesn't make sense at all" highlights the absurdity of the question being asked, but also underscores the importance of the answer. Ultimately, the song is an exploration of human emotion and desire, and the complexities of building a life with someone else.
