Open Our Eyes
Funkadelic Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Father, open our eyes, that we
may see, to follow thee. Oh lord
grant us, thy lovin' peace, and let
all dissension cease. Let our fait,
each day increase,
and Master - Lord please-
Open our eyes, open our eyes-
He has given us, hills and mountains, he
has given us, level places.
He has given us food and clothing,
given us shelter from the storm and the rain-
And all that he provided,
kept us shelter from the storm and the rain-

Grant us thy lovin' peace,
and let all dissension cease,
let our faith each day increase,

and Master - Lord please
Open our eyes, open our eyes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Open Our Eyes" by Funkadelic are a prayer for spiritual guidance and peace. The singer calls out to their Father to open their eyes so they can see the path to following Him. They also request the Lord's loving peace and an end to all discord, while hoping that their faith will grow stronger each day. In the second verse, the singer acknowledges the blessings bestowed upon them - hills, mountains, level places, food, clothing, and shelter. They express gratitude for these provisions and note that their safety from storms has been ensured. The singer reiterates their plea for inner peace and faith, asking the Master to open their eyes once again.

The song's lyrics are a reflection of George Clinton's upbringing in the church. Clinton grew up in a religious household and sang in his church choir as a young boy. The song's melody is based on the traditional gospel song "Open Our Eyes, Lord", which was written by Robert Cull and made popular by the group The Gospel Clefs. Funkadelic's version was released in 1972 as part of their album "America Eats Its Young" and became a hit on the R&B charts.

I copped the cd collection. Awesome package with interesting booklet about the story of Funkadelic's beginnings.

Try replicating the monstrous tone of Eddie's solo on the end of this song... damn near impossible. Still the greatest guitarist in my eyes. Eddie hazel. Guaranteed he was tripping acid, sweating and crying when recording this song, particularly the solo.. and one of Bernie Worrel's first introductions in Funkadelic.

@chris edwards awesome. I know Atkins was on that early 1969 footage in Detroit, with Eddie, and George flying high on that potent acid lol my fav footage, even though you can barely hear Eddie. Btw, good to see ya, my fellow Funkadelic brother

What's crazy is that Eddie Hazel, one of the greatest guitarists of all time, is singing here, and he was only 19 when this album was released.
