Sales is often like that.

Now, it depends on what you're selling and the company you work for. Most of the high pressure gigs are really shady. Basically you're more of a conman than salesman. Stuff like most cold calling or timeshare and stuff like that.

Stuff that is a bit more reputable is often more forgiving (but harder to get), but there is always at least some pressure. More than most jobs.

The truth is that very few people are naturally good at it and those who are fall into two categories:

1) The People Person. They genuinely like people and make excellent conversationalists. They can read people easily and know how to explain why you want what they are selling. They can take a person who doesn't want X and break down how X will benefit them and make them think that cannot possibly live without X and the next thing the customer is buying four of them.

2) The Sociopath. They are purely in it for the money and they will do anything to make the sale. Steal sales from coworkers? No problem. They shouldn't left their prospects out in plain sight. They'll lie about what they are selling absolutely shamelessly. They'll bully leads into buying. It's not uncommon for these people to do very well over a period of weeks up to a year (often becoming one of the top salesmen) until they get fired or even arrested for the shit they've done.

Yeah, and they all do a great job showing you how people would more or less take this kind of speech. One guy’s silently stewing over how unfair all this is, who does this guy think he is to talk to me of all people like that, etc. Ed Harris starts that way, but you can see by the end the point is kinda setting in. Meanwhile, Al Pacino is the only one who really “doesn’t need this shit” - he’s out doing his job.

The entire ensemble functioned as one perfect unit. They were all 100% committed to the script and the film to point that (as I recall) they all forfeited their pay in order that the film could be done. The lighting and effects are first class. This is a masterpiece of film making. Lemmon brought his A game as did everyone else. For me, it's one of those films (in my top 100 favs list) that I watch every year, like I'd visit a fine art gallery.....experiencing it anew, in the moment. What happened to great film making? It's virtually gone today.

I worked in an office like this. This mentality exists in sales to a high degree. I remember us standing around as a guy got a sales call and bullshitted the person over the phone to no end, while the bosses were standing around and fist pumping as he quoted an overly high price and had the guy on the ropes, squeezing as much as he could on what we all knew would be a broken promise. I was an honest salesman and had a 97% renewal rate because I always kept my word on what I sold (the dishonest guys barely had 50%, but hit their numbers on paper). I did not last a long time, despite bringing in as much as the dishonest sales guys. They want guys like Baldwin's character that are aggressive, talk a big game, and always closing no matter what.

I had a similar experience at a call center selling to new phone service customers. The whole thing was a scam, a 3rd party hired to represent a major phone company and get new customers to buy more products that were worthless. No one in their right mind would seek out these products so they hired us at 10 an hour plus commission back in 2000. I was always perfect in my delivery followed all the protocols they taught me and was doing everything 100% however I was not selling much. I was always being pressured by the team leads that I was going to be let go even though when the execs from the phone company would visit, it was my calls they were screening and the manger of the call center would always put them on me. Never mind the fact that the top sellers were "slamming" customers and offering BS which most of the time ended up leaving a bad taste in the customers mouths when all was said and done. Sales is not a line of work that appeals to those with a modicum of integrity.

One brilliant thing about this scene is Blake (Baldwin) is selling them on doing their jobs. AIDA he’s literally explaining the sales pitch to them while pitching them. Nearly every interaction in this movie is people pitching to each other

Yes!!!...I'm trying to explain to folks what the scene represents...its all just a big sales pitch...its so well done that you dodnt even think, why are the leads tied in a bow, that's kinda dramatic isnt it?...or why the hell is this man walking around with brass balls in his briefcase?...its because hes closing thier asses like a G...being a salesman can be like being a performer who has to figure out what his audience wants to see...this is simply a brilliant scene...people dont really understand that when a salesperson is involved you arent buying the product, you're buying the person selling it to you...

How does that motivate, though? You can only get that far with pressure. Piling on more pressure doesn't make you a better salesman. He said he could earn 15k in 2 hours with the same leads but he doesn't say how, so what's that worth, eh? Also, they could all be closing like crazy and one of them would get fired anyway ... I don't know but if anything this would motivate me to quit the job right there. More even, I would ask the others to do the same. In that scenario Baldwins unnamed character had to explain himself to his boss. Sure, he''ll just say these guys were hacks and should have been fired a long time ago but still. And yes, quitting would be hard but let's face it: Do you really want to do this job anymore? I mean even if you win you'll be facing a similar contest again in the future and you will probably really stop playing with your kids etc. That's really not worth it. Worse yet, you might become like Baldwin yourself.

I often recite this to my newborn to calm him down when he is fussy. He plays a good Moss. Trouble is, he can't see the watch because his eyes can't focus. Also, he doesn't know the difference between a Hyundai and a BMW. Good father? Yes, I will go home and play with my kids. Even if it means I have to shine some shoes. Great movie.

This was a great movie, the writing , the cast, all of it, This performance by Baldwin is outstanding, if you take into consideration the talent he was acting with , and the length of that monologue, google it, take a look at it, to memorize that then deliver the performance is no easy task, it’s work, I know I acted in theatre for several years, the best actors tap into a piece of themselves to bring out the character, De Niro , Pacino have all done it. I think we all know Baldwin is a bit of a prick in real life, but he brought to this performance and it worked

One of my all-time top 3 movie scenes...along with the terrifying dentist's chair in Marathon Man & the unforgettable Hopper/Walken dialogue in True Romance.
I always believed that Al Pacino must've dictated his own terms that he was NOT gonna be involved in this humiliating reprimand and lambasted like a child so
he was conveniently out of the office when Baldwin showed up.

My old girlfriend and I saw this on stage in Louisville, Kentucky years ago with unknown actors. I wore a suit and tie to the show on the off chance that whomever played Blake would be sick. I could do the whole scene perfectly (in my mind). Problem was, this scene isn't in the play. I was heartbroken. I went home and called Mitch and Murray.

Back in the early 90s I worked for a timeshare sales office located right across the street from the Mall of America. We were actually shown this speech on videotape during a sales meeting, in order to "motivate" us. And we didn't get any steak knives. :-(

To me, that aggresive sales world is just not worth it. I spent some time in environments like that as a young man with no college degree trying to make a living in sales. Those guys (even Alec's character) look like slaves to a system that will never satisfy, and will always demand more. That's just my opinion. These song lyrics always stuck with me after I became a dad....."I've watched my days, turn into years, and now I'm wondering how I wound up here. I dreamed my dreams, I made my plans, but all I've built here is an empty man". No one ought to have to put with up with this to make an honest living and enjoy it. I was rescued from that life and live conservative enough financially to do what I love. Again, all of that is just my take on the work world. People do what they have to for a little while but hopefully in due time, they can break free from that. Life is about so much more. Anyway, this scene just got me thinking haha.

When life wasn't a google search away, people were a lot more on the fence about things so you'd cold call people asking if they were interested in selling, sometimes with industry knowledge like knowing other people neighbourhood were moving out, or a family living in an apartment for a while maybe looking to move into a house to raise the odds. Success rate was understandably low but competition was much lower and weaker than in the modern day too.

Every time Alec was asked a question, he replied that with his car and watch worth. He compared his clients from downtown to the ones living in a broke suburb. He mentioned leads that were kept hidden, obviously because they were trash.

At this point, a smart man would’ve realized that company is losing money and they are going to downsize. His efforts would be better suited elsewhere.

If I did return to the work force and the boss sicked some asshole like Blake on me, I would tell him to go to hell and walk out. Blake's "motivational speech" actually backfired. It "inspired" 2 employees to steal the leads and sell them to a competitor.

Alec should have gotten The Academy Award for that performance.I actually was a salesman for the company which was based in Forest Hills, New York. It was called Rio Ranchos.Economy was good back in 1972. I sold lots of land in New Mexico from the Forest Hills office. Actor Leif Erikson did the TV commercials.

The problem with most sales people is they give speeches when they sell instead of having a conversation and making a connection. If you make a connection and have a conversation, you can encourage someone to follow your direction. If you speak at them and essentially give a seminar to them, they will zone out in the first 2 minutes and want nothing from you. Also, become the worlds biggest expert in the product and industry you sell in. If you are seen as an expert, people will listen to you and do what you say. In summary, become an expert and have a conversation with your customer that connects with them. Easy.

The thing is you can still give à speech and spark the connection through motivation. Ive done sales all my life and run à successful business for 6yrs. Most people need the motivation and sometimes à monologue of confidence is just enough to pull them in the right direction

The leads will go stale if they are not worked soon. Williamson should have distributed the lead with the caveat that if the salesmen failed to close these leads, they would be fired. He was a lousy manager, Mitch and Murray were terrible bosses, and Blake was an obnoxious blowhard. All his speech accomplished was to piss off the employees and motivate 2 of them to steal the leads and sell them to a competitor.

The fact that Ellen Burstyn wasnt nominated for her role in Requiem for a Dream is a crime. She was beyond acting in that movie. brilliant. @Trevor Smith Starship troopers is a very pro militarist book which was intentionally written as a rebuke to the left and many have, fairly credibly, called proto-fascist in philosophy. The book was licensed for an action movie with a plot already in place and a few superficial plot elements and names were grafted on in a messy manny to give it some credibility. The resulting film was an arguably fun mess without the intelligence to glean much in actual theme.

So, yeah, starship troopers, definitely not a critique of fascism.

A great scene, but when I finally got around to watching the full movie I felt like this indeed turned out to be more bluster than truth. The leads WERE weak; Levene's big sell at the end was to a couple that the firm KNEW were crackpots, lonely nutcases that just like talking to salesmen on the phone for conversation. Spacey's character confirms it. He just never bothered to tell Levene because he didn't like him. I'm not saying these guys would've otherwise been ace salesmen, but when you know that the leads were that bad it's hard to take this speech seriously in hindsight. Scam telemarketing sales with sham leads; definitely something to puff your chest over. XD

@1995yuda the writer of this movie - who also wrote the play this is based on - EXPLICITLY condemns this kind of thinking. He HATES people like this and people like you who buy into it. The whole thing is meant to criticize this, it’s not even just me inventing that out of nowhere it is literally NOT meant to be taken at face value. It’s intentionally repulsive. The writer of this movie used to work in sales and hated every goddamned minute of it because it was an exercise in complete sociopathy to him. If you think that’s a positive you do you but know that the people who made the movie don’t agree with you. Hell, even the fact that this still gets played at sales jobs everywhere as a motivator horrified him.

@Serbadork I am both a screewriter and a professional sales man. I know the screewriter's stand and it means jack-shit. This is well written because it's true, it resonates with sales man who go out there and sell, not with armchair philosophers. Nothing is repulsive about influencing people to make the right decision at the right time and cash a check to take care of your familiy, you're just soft like the screenwriter who wrote this. He did well at writing, but sales isn't for him and it shows. Fight Club's screenwriter didn't mean for his script to become a catalyst for a men's movement but it did because it hit that sweet spot and nobody gives a fck he's not for it. Being a good sales man is perhaps the most noble job in the world but you wouldn't know anything about it sweet cheeks.

I sold several different products in-home for a few years. I never knowingly lied to the people or promised them anything I knew the company couldn't deliver on. Whether they bought or not depended on two things, it seemed: 1) either they liked me and trusted me, or they didn't; 2) the overall state of the economy at that time. But sales is difficult, make no mistake. And sometimes the customers screw you around, repeatedly, by, e.g., not being there when you show up for an appointment, and then agreeing to reset it, and then not being there again the second time.
