I got the japanese version of this game because I couldn't wait, imagine how much time I lost before somebody told me that I had to look at the cd cover for Meryl's codec frequency!

If you want to dodge Psycho Mantis' trown objects you just duck.

During the torture scene, I think there's three possible outcomes: you either resist torture (Meryl's ending, good), you either surrender (Otacon's ending, bad) or you die and it's game over, no continue. I could be wrong.

This game's soundtrack is AMAZING!

Fun fact: Metal Gear Solid is the only chapter that was dubbed in other languages than english and japanese, eventhough the version I played (the italian one) was poorly adapted and voice actors were overacting along the whole game. I think beside the japanese Game Over screen, the American version is the best (game's difficulty apart).

Actually you can aim, shot and move at the same time. Try aiming with the socom gun and press the crouch button. 😂 I know this since I was a kid who don't even understand English even a little due to VR training, you can do the same in MGS 2&3. I was trying to get the best time possible in VR missions and without this move it was impossible I guess.

@Dennis Gorospe Unfortunately we won't see any official remakes. Kojima himself said every game looks and plays exactly how it should and Konami owns the rights, a company he no longer works for. His philosophy is reflected in games like MGS4 where you see flashbacks of older games with their original graphics, as well as in MGS2 with flashbacks to MGS1.

For real. Figuring out Meryl’s codec on the back of the case. Beating mantis by switching ports. Mgs along with the ff7,8,9 and some of the survival horror games made me spend the most time playing my ps1 even more than my other consoles at the time like the snes sega. The maturity in gaming was just unmatched at that time. It’s hard to understand if you weren’t there at the right age.

MGS1 will forever be one of my best memories in gaming. I remember playing it for the first time growing up and I was absolutely blown away. I've probably beat it 50+ times to this day and still enjoy it. This game was years ahead of its time. There's so many details, dynamics, and different aspects of game play along with a a very good story that ties everything in perfectly. With better graphics it could easily rival any game that has come out since then 24 years ago. All in a very good Era of gaming too. Today's games look more realistic and intense than ever, but they just lack something that this game had. Idk what it is, but they're just not the same.

I was under the impression that he salvaged it from the chopper you shoot down with Stinger? Makes sense cos after you shoot it down and proceed to the snowfield, there is a parachute seen in the trees which hints liquid landed there so the Hind wouldn't be far off. Then from there you go to the underground base where raven is in wait with the gun from the chopper

If you rapidly smash circle the way I did, your arm probably hurt. Then you get a codec call where Snake mentions his arm hurting. They tell you to place the controller on your arm and they make it vibrate.

I loved how the whole Ninja / Gray Fox first scene resembles the "Predator" (yeah the Arnold one), as theres such an erie horror tone on this segment.

Psyco Mantis had that horror vibe as well.

Come to think of it the bosses are all really good regarding backstory, looks, character... i just love this game man..!

Pretty sure this one of the first games I've played where it actually scared me as a kid first playing it.
The ninja scene and psycho mantis always gave me chills, and the ninja part I was thinking ghosts and stuff.
Then I learned after getting the camera 📷 you could catch pics of actual ghosts hidden in the game.
When I first discoved it was taking a picture of myself in the women's bathroom after Meryl, and to my horror after developing it what I saw.

That's why the game had such an impact. At that time you just never saw that level of character development or convincing voice acting. I think it was probably the first game to do this and it basically changed how people perceived games and what a game could actually be story wise.

Funny story: When I was like 13 I beat Psycho Mantis WITHOUT changing the controller to the second port. The reason being that I am Mexican and was playing the European Spanish dub version AND turns out that the Spaniards use a word for "controller" and "controller port" that is almost unheard of in Mexico and therefore, I had no idea what the HELL the colonel was talking about and i just could not figure it out. I just killed him in like a million tried chipping away at his health and it took me like an hour no joke. Imagine my shock when someone told me that you were supposed to do in PLAIN FUCKING SPANISH lol.

Its insane how subjective an analysis can be. As a kid playing this game, I remember the Psycho Mantis encounter as being so different from anything I had played before. The quirkyness to the mechanics of how to beat him set the stage for games like Eternal Darkness on the GameCube.

I actually really liked the over the top action scenes! You have to consider that The Matrix and Romeo must die had just come out and those kind of scenes were THE new thing! Finally Hollywoord recognised something that was typically found only in anime. I think for that reason it really fits the game with its over the top villains and a Hollywood version of something that has essentially the structure of an anime

Bro, you can run and shoot at the same. Hold square to draw weapon, then hold X to enable move/aim. Continue holding X, then release square button to shoot. Every time you press Square, you'll shoot, and you'll be able to move if you keep holding X. Makes Ocelot fight much easier

I don´t know what version of the pc port you played, or what versions are available, but in my original CD version the stealth effects worked perfectly!
Also, when the Louvre of videogames finally opens, Metal Gear Solid and Half Life each deserve a special place of honor. Two incredibly influential games!

Insane that this game still mostly holds up today given the limited hardware it was developed on. Maybe it is nostalgia but back in the day I feel that developers actually pushed the hardware to the limit when making games. The 3D GTA Trilogy is a perfect example of that.

19:23 You know, that's actually not such a far-fetched idea, considering that the Genome Soldiers were all under Psycho Mantis' influence. It's possible that he was using his psychic powers to turn them into walking, talking cameras. Then again, they can still instantly alert their comrades after Mantis dies, so maybe they just have bodycams or something. Anyway, great review as always, Gman. Keep it up!

@Supre Supremo Well that's just wrong. I've played the PC port it definitely has superior graphics to the PSX version. It definitely doesn't look as good as twin snakes but twin snakes has its own set of problems that the PC port does not have.

Seems the PC port has few of it's stories during the production phase. I never got to play the PC port but from what I know back then the graphics hasn't improved much from PSX version, unlike the GameCube port, or remake if I would stated. That was a feast of an eye to play Metal Gear Solid again, with great graphics.

In Metal Gear (MSX, 1987) you can use thermal goggles and cigarettes to see laser beams and use cardboard box to hide yourself from moving surveillance cameras. Metal Gear Solid had many elements that first appeared in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX, 1990) from little gameplay details (catching cold and alerting everyone by sneezing, disarming claymores, punching walls for luring enemies) to storydriven and scripted sequences (stairway chase, battle with Hind D), pretty good story and great music

Definitely a game-changer. Everyone at school was keeping Christmas money by for the game's release in March and I did the same (really hard thing to do for a kid my age) but it was worth it. Hiding bodies and stealth right down to popping Valium in order to hold a sniper rifle steady were really far-out concepts for the time.

Absolutely iconic masterpiece. Ground breaking stuff. Mgs2 was more uhhh interesting i guess youd say and really fleshed stuff out, 3 was even tighter and super focused. Both arguably better games but nothing can touch the impact mgs1 had. Blew me away. The aesthetic, the atmosphere, holy shit it stuck with me.

The stealth effect is used the same way as water effect and works if you use a 3dfx Glide API, or emulate it with a Glide Wrapper.

It was also possible to run at 1024x768 if you used Voodoo 2 in SLi.

The psycho mantis boss fight is legendary. The first time I went thru it was awesome! When he tells u what's on ur memory card. I really thought I was going crazy for a minute. And the fact u have to change your controller to port 2 cause he's "reading your mind." So cool!

Great video! I remember I would always troll the second Sniper Wolf fight with the Nikita launcher. As soon as the fight starts, go all the way to the right and use the hill as cover. Snake is invincible. Wolf is unable to hit Snake from this spot, so you can unleash Nikita rockets until Wolf dies. Probably one of the easiest boss fights in video game history, and this is coming from someone who is dreadful at video games 🎮👍😆

This game is super ahead of its time I just played it for the first time ever recently and it's fantastic in pretty much every aspect. The cinematic and voice acting are top notch and there is alot of variety in what you can do in the gameplay. It's better then most games out today and I'll stand by that. I love mgs the whole series.

I didn't play Metal Gear Solid until I was basically an adult 5 or 6 years ago, 17 years after its release. On an emulator. On PC. With dodgy controls.

It is still one of the best and most memorable games I have played, and one of my fondest gaming experiences. Definitely one of my all time favourites.

I remember being a kid and reaching the CD case bit. Colonel tells me to check the back of the CD case. Man, I was stuck for days. Running around looking for a CD case in game. When it was actually the physical Metal Gear Solid CD case I got from the store haha🤦😂

If you look on the back, you can see a screenshot of Snake and the Colonel, as well as the codex code needed.

@moosesnWoop123 I did not get the message that the game wanted me to look at the actual game CD case, but then I noticed that there were just 200 channels of Codec, and so I gave each of them a try and got mine's. Still memorable but not as much as how you got it. 😄

BROOOOOOO I went up and down those floor searching for a fucking case - The game really broke so many walls.

Eventually, because I lost the jewel case, I had to get a screenshot off Google images back in 2003/4 - and because I didn't have internet at home, I had to do it at the school libary, print it out and then try it out.

Imagine doing actual physical work for a videogame. That's why it's so memorable.

One thing I did enjoy with the Twin Snakes version was that the devs did include a shortcut to reduce the backtracking for changing the keycard shapes. On the right side of the main hangar there are steam and nitrogen lines you could shoot to instantly change the keycard shape. But it was risky because it involved hang, drop, and then catching the next rail to get to the pipes. MGS1 is damn good. If you do have a PS3 and a physical PS1 copy you can play it that way as well. All PS3s play PS1 physical games.

When I played MGS back in the day, I was blown away by what they did cinematically, and I could see real efforts they were making to make the game more grounded and realistic, breaking away from the ties that video games once had. They made your actions have consequence, and they even tried to shift away from having names like "Big Boss" by acknowledging that all these soldiers had other names.
And then in MGS2 they had a vampire who literally stood on water and pinned your shadow, and a boss you could never hit just because "she was lucky."

I am amazed I missed out on this franchise as long as I did.

I didn't even know about Metal Gear until I played Metal Gear Rising back in 2013 during that whole fanwar:
The DmC reboot vs MGR.
Then I was so interested in the world I jumped back to MGS4 and was amazed, then I went and played the HD Collection for Sons of Liberty, Snake Eater and Peace walker and was even more blown away.
I don't think I played the Original MGS1 till the end but damn did I love it and still play it to this day.
Plus I know a lot of people have their issues with The Phantom Pain, but it remains my most played MGS game to date with nearly 500 hours played.

But this isn't Doom... it's not meant to be doom. It's the complete opposite. Same goes for criticizing the fact that the game actually has flinch when you get shot by Sniper Wolf; this ain't no Call of Duty where getting shot has the equivalent reaction of getting bit by a large mosquito.

Great job on these Metal Gear videos! I just recently saw some of your recent ones and they were excellent too.

I just wanted to mention that the reason I got into Metal Gear was because it was one of the demos on a Pizza Hut disc back in the day. I played more times out of that demo than any other in my life. Eventually when I got a PlayStation I rented it from Blockbuster and beat it in one weekend. Great times back in 6th-7th grade.

Agreed about Snake's voice, it's very distinct and powerful. I'm proud to say, I can do a dead-on Solid Snake impression. If I had a time machine, I would visit my younger self at age 11 and speak in the Snake voice and watch his brain explode, causing to a time paradox.

This is such a great video! MGS was so ahead of its time! The stealth, the codec, the cardboard box and the Psycho Mantis controller switch. Even getting the wolves to pee on your cardboard box so that they won’t attack you! Not many games have that same level of detail. One of the best games ever! One thing I do disagree with though; the torture scene is iconic, it takes you behind enemy lines and into Foxhounds lair. I don’t agree that it slows the game down, in fact I think the game would have been weaker without it.

Also, my ringtone is still the codec sound, and my texts have the ! sound ☺️

I found Twin Snakes to be pretty good as a remake, although to be fair, this was my first introduction to the original MGS. I definitely need to play the original emulated to see the differences. Either way, it was a major revelation for video games and has gone to create on of the most insane, yet incredible series ever.

People found a VR target in the Metal Gear hangar in Twins Snakes a while ago, confirming that the game is Raiden's VR experience of the Shadow Moses incident. The one that led him to believe MGS2's events would play out like his training.

It doesn't make the game any less broken, but it does explain the MGS2 flippy acrobatics during cutscenes since that's Raiden's movements going wild on what's essentially a dramatization of events constructed to train future soldiers. Also considering what was done in MGS2, making the Colonel sound more robotic the entire game long ahead of the big reveal later on, I wonder if the incredibly bored and uncaring VA work in Twin Snakes was intentional too. That or the actors really didn't want to do all these lines again. I wouldn't blame them.

I'm replaying this for the first time in a couple of years and I thought I was going crazy lol The game does have a couple of gameplay issues I didn't notice in my earlier playthroughs. The autoaim feels unreliable a lot of the time (especially against bosses), the fact that Snake moves his aim to the opposite side whenever he gets shot at is incredibly frustrating and the movement also feels a bit janky at times, especially when you're trying to go up against a wall and walk sideways at the same time. Still a masterpiece in my mind, just curious how you can notice things that you didn't notice before but were there all along.

It’s like you read my mind when critiquing Twin Snakes cut scenes! Still the original MGS is one of my all time favourite games, I remember having a demo CD with it on and feeling sad when it cut off in the cell. I never looked at games the same way again after finally playing through MGS and it’s times like this I still wish I had my PS1.

Attention to detail, thats what made mgs so awesome in my opinion: Snake's breathing, enemies reacting to footprints, player actions affect cutscenes (like grabbing the socom or not at the beggining, sneaking or being spotted, saving the game or not doing it so often), the different ways you can beat some bosses, the controller moving when Psycho Mantis tells you to put it on the ground and he uses his power (vibration) to move it, the fact that you can kill Baker before getting inside the room where he's being kept, different ways to scape the cell, and my personal favourite... when Liquid starts the bomb countdown but you can't fight just yet, and during his speech telling you the condition you are in, the counter keeps going down.

You share many of my same sentiments toward this game.. and of its remake haha.. but i think the bosses were all awesome, psycho mantis breaking the 4th wall blew my pre-pubescent mind.. I love snake eater as well, but this is my favorite game of all time. I was 10 yrs old when i first played this game and after beating it, i felt like a grown ass man.. the snippets and the editing in this video were awesome, you made me laugh out loud quite a few times. This imo is the best video detailing MGS1 so you got a like and subscribe from me. Now i feel the urge to play it again and all i have is this ps4!

All the magic of a 12 year old playing mgs1 on a og ps1 with a 13” bedroom tv, at the time…it was so immersive…I think it was a big reason I made it through a bad home environment somewhat ok. Snake was definitely the masculine badass i needed for a role model lol

Aww, Twin Snakes was my introduction to the series, and it blew my mind at the time. I'd never heard of mgs before, being from a Nintendo household. Its ridiculous compared to the original, but it felt real as a kid in a Iraq War kind of world. It has a place in my heart. I think some of the music is good in its own right too. But you can definitely see a lot of The Matrix in the cinematics. And the booty definitely got nerfed.

I will say two things you kinda missed.
In B1 of the second building (same building that you enter after taking out the tank) there is a level 3 room with Nikita Missiles ready to go, not a far trip AND can be further cut down by just going there first.
The Rat doesn't always eat the PAL Key, if you are fast enough, you can get the card immediately (also in the Otacon ending it's never touched by the rat, but then again you also miss out on having two bombs in your inventory that you have to toss out)

Why was it so good? Sorry Shin, although Metal Gear on PS1 was apparently more popular, for me it was Tenchu : Stealth Assassins with the TV brightness turned down ultra low so you can only really see the Ki Meter. I'm so sad.

I played this game religiously when it came out. Both fights against sniper wolf and the raven fight I used to use Nikita missiles. With Psycho mantis I used to switch controller ports when the fight started so he couldn't read snake's mind. Good memories
