Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Yes I'm sitting right here
waiting for you my dear
wondering if you ever
wanna show up
I dont know youre gonna show
but nevertheless I staying
you got to be waiting
Sittin in the park, waiting for hooo-hoo-hoo-hoo sha-la-la
Sitting here on the bench
with my back against the fence
wonderin-a-if I
have any sense
Something tells me I'm a fool
let you treat me so cruel
but nevertheless I say again
you gotta be waiting
Sittin in the park, waiting for hoooo-hoo-hoo-hoo
Why oh, why oh, why oh, why oh, why oh, why oh, why
won't you tell me why
Oh my darlin I'm sittin right now
oh, girl, I wanna know why? why? sha-la-la-la
Sittin in the park, waiting for hooo-hoo-hoo-hoo sha-la-la
Sitting here on the bench
with my back against the fence
wonderin-a-if I
have any sense
Something tells me I'm a fool
let you treat me so cruel
nevertheless I say it
you gotta be waiting
Sittin in the park, waiting for hooo-hoo-hoo-hoo
No I'm not gonna wait
I am tired of waiting
No longer gonna wait, girl
Any longerrrrr
I'm tired of waiting
No longer gonna wait, girl
The lyrics of GQ's song "Sitting in the Park" tell a tale of a person waiting for their significant other, questioning their commitment to the relationship. The lines "Yes, I'm sitting right here, waiting for you my dear, wondering if you ever wanna show up" express the singer's uncertainty and unease about their lover's whereabouts and intentions. The repetition of "hooo-hoo-hoo-hoo sha-la" creates an almost desperate and melancholic tone, adding to the sense of longing and apprehension.
The second verse continues the singer's self-doubt, as they wonder if they are foolish for putting up with neglectful treatment from their partner. However, they stubbornly hold on, repeating that the other person "gotta be waiting." The chorus repeats again, this time with a plea for an explanation: "Why oh, why oh, why oh, why oh, why oh, why oh, why / Won't you tell me why?" The song ends with a declaration of independence, as the singer decides they will no longer wait and put up with being mistreated.
Overall, "Sitting in the Park" is a classic soul song that captures the pain and confusion of unrequited love. Its simple melody, catchy hooks, and heartfelt lyrics have resonated with audiences for decades, making it a beloved standard of the genre.
