Trying to look at the bright side.... At least I saw some Pre-New 52 designs for certain characters that have been floundering since New 52. Nice to see classic Cassandra Cain and T-shirt Conner Kent. Stargirl looks like she is just picking up from before. Wally being the focus of the Flash books will probably disappoint, but I'll give it a shot.

Despite the funny name, I'll probably read that Asian Festival book. I went into 'Superman of China' thinking it would be stupid, but wound up really liking it, so I'll give this new one a chance too.

Actually went back and read what I could find of Shilo Normans 90s stuff after you reviewed the last MM book. Glad I did, I'm inclined to agree about him being an interesting character to take over from Scott Free. Missed all that completely, prior to that I only knew him from the Kirby appearance.

@Andrew Owens Honestly not sure about Scott and Barda. They were both alive again in New 52 and afterward, but the last thing I read with them in it was the 2017 mini-series, which was...not wholly satisfying. Felt like it was trying to be deep and not quite succeeding, but that might have just been me.

I think what makes me sad is that the stories just don't seem interest me, I want to care but it all just feels placebo atp. Maybe ill try out a title here and there, but DC AND Marvel just can't seem to grab its audience anymore.

What I hate is they took the date of the comic off last year, it used to be on the barcode, because I’m always behind in my reading I could line up the comics by their date, so I’m not like 3 months ahead in one book. Like I just bought all the Death Metal comics & nearly every tie-in one shot. Now I have to search on the DC app to see their release date so I know what order to read them in. Before I could just go by the date on the cover.

Very cautiously hopeful about Milestone's return, but that may be due to excessive nostalgia. The Dakota universe was one of the better things to come out of a generally awful decade in comics. Be particularly nice to see Xombi return, but that may be asking too much - and it arguably should have been a Vertigo book all along anyway.

20:40 As far as I can tell, Ravager (as in Rose Wilson) doesn't/didn't have a daughter before this and this Flatline is a brand new character who can probably expect a visit from Vertigo's Death telling her to get her own look, please. Flatline is also a member of H.A.R.D.Corps over in Valiant and a DC New Earth character that looks like the 90s threw up on itself and this is why the Tick makes jokes about supers getting in fights over supranyms.

23:57 Fun fact - hyenas live at most about 12 years, and take about 3 years to reach maturity. How long have Harley and Giggles the Murder Clown been dragging those mangy things around with them now, three decades or more? Have we missed them being replaced several times over, along with the extensive training periods you'd need for each new set so they don't just kill their idiot "owners" on the spot? Have we ever seen either of these murder hobos take the poor things to a vet, or even have a henchman do it? Are there criminal vets who specialize in supervill pet care in the DCU? Does Penguin use the same vet for his birds? What do the authorities do with the hyenas when their masters inevitably wind up doing a stretch in Arkham? Does Harley have to break her mutts out of a zoo every time she gets loose again? If so, why doesn't the GCPD or Bats keep a watch on the incarcerated hyenas and just recapture whichever nitwit comes for them before their next killing spree starts?

These stupid things may be iconic ever since the 90s animated series introduced them alongside Harley, but they raise so many questions.

I admit I know less of Mr. Miracle (outside of that Superman debacle) than most other characters but the fact he was a new god intrigued. It does make me wonder if his abilities to escape the "impossible" were more centered around his divine status, or training, or some mix of both. If the first, I think they've actively ham-strung this new version for not being a new god himself. I do think it could be an interesting way to state that a highly skilled escape artist can be comparable to Scott in many areas. (He was one himself; but it could be interesting as a dig into exactly how much he relied on that divine status to get him out - or more specifically a take on his power levels as a new god if he did not. The really interesting part is it could be read either way: He's either the weakest new god imaginable for never using his powers, or very low-key the strongest because he never had to and thus could store more energy passively to constantly enhance himself, thus creating an even stronger circuit for never having to into an eternal loop. You could even tie that awareness into how Barda who is overtly more the physical type, fell for Scott IE she could see that point where others would discount it) If it's that Shiloh was just as well trained, they'd still probably have to scale the feats more realistically to be fair, but I think this character could have a good run that's more thought provoking than many might assume. Will he pass the mantle in a family legacy, or will there be a way for Scott to prove himself the ultimate "Miracle Man" and return to become the next All Father (if you count canon the fact that the new gods were all butchered) * Scott could actually be compared to the Norse Baldur in that sense, and it would make sense for him to be able to cheat even true death, by the very nature of his power set. (He knows the life equation - or whatever it's called - so he's probably the only new god for whom even the things that would kill one of their race, won't count)

FWIW, the early Scott Free stories downplayed his New Gods origins considerably and had him relying more on skill, borderline inhuman reflexes, planning and gadgetry than raw power for his escapes. More recent ones have gone the other route, with him displaying vastly superhuman levels of strength, durability, a rapid healing factor, and combat skills rivalling (say) Wonder Woman - to the detriment of the character IMO. There was a also a period where Scott and Barda were attempting to quit the supers/cosmic war scene altogether and make a more normal life for themselves on Earth, which leaves room for a new Mister Miracle in the person of Shilo - but that was a long time ago and seems to be about as forgotten as "white pantsuit, no powers" Wonder Woman these days.

Shilo is baseline human in about the same way Batman is (ie he can do what the plot calls for), but augmented with extensive training from Scott, years of his own experience, and a whole lot of New Genesis tech that he's further tweaked to his own preferences. Just being able to improve on alien super-tech suggests the guy could give Mister Terrific or Cyborg a run for their money as far as being the tech genius in the room.

I am a big Fourth World(JLI and Mr Miracle solo series fan also) fan and I even left a long comment listing Shilo's history on your vid announcing his series to help combat the "Race-swapping argument", but I'm getting more and more concerned as we learn more about the mini. From the full title of the book to the retconning of origin, it seems they are going to push the fact that he's a "Black Superhero breaking from the CHAINS of his reality". Black person equals Slavery ad infinitum...Shilo is MUCH more interesting than a race PSA.

40% of DC sales are batman related if people would actually read other characters when they have a series this wouldnt be an issue an before i get accused of anything i read 2 batman titles thats it. Hawkman gets canceled cause nobody reads it then every body bitches and complains about it but nobody would read it still. I'm Asian, and I think the Asian celebration comic is stupid. Anecdotal stories show that a focus on race or ethnicity doesn't sell well. I saw it that it was 96 pages and immediately assumed it was going to be $10. It's a cash grab, if anything. According to Perch's 2019 sales analysis, DC is shifting to selling less at a higher price, and this is just proof of that.

Earlier today before I watched this video, I saw an article about the Asian celebration comic. So I went to leagueofcomicgeeks.com and went to May and then I saw that there was a Star Girl comic coming out the same week as that Asian celebration and got more excited about that because I like Geoff Johns.
Moreover, I read the solicitation and it sounds dumb. When I think of Cassandra Cain, the first word that comes to mind isn't "Asian". So dumb. Who looks at Cassandra Cain and says "I like her because she's Asian".

I don't have a particular favorite Asian character either. New Superman is ok, but he's kind of bland. The only Asian character I think is cool is Egg Fu from 52 because he looks scary and it's dumb fun. You turn the page and you're like "What the heck is this guy? Who is he?".

Speaking of 52, for that Other History of the DCU Renee Montoya issue, I saw it, and thought "oh no, what if they turn her into a crybaby" and based on the solicits, that's what it sounds like smh.

The Asian superheroes anthology? I’m all for more Asian representation, but I’m not convinced the anthology route is the one to take. No, don’t flood the market with ongoing series for each of the characters featured, that just gets annoying. Do weave them into other books, however, where they make sense.

There’s a bunch of Future State books and stories that don’t seem to have corresponding Infinite Frontier titles yet. Also, what, half of the dozen writers DC’s promoted as major voices still unaccounted for? Where are they?
