In The Waiting Line
Garden State Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wait in line till your time
Ticking clock everyone stop

Everyone's saying different things to me
Different things to me
Everyone's saying different things to me
Different things to me
Do you believe in what you see
There doesn't seem to be
Anybody else who agrees with me

Do you believe in what you see
Motionless wheel nothing is real
Wasting my time in the waiting line
Do you believe in what you see

Nine to five living lies
Everyday stealing time

Everyone's taking everything they can
Everything they can
Everyone's taking everything they can
Everything they can

Do you believe in what you feel
It doesn't seem to be
Anybody else who agrees with me

Do you believe in what you see
Motionless wheel nothing is real
Wasting my time in the waiting line
Do you believe in what you see

And I'll shout and I'll scream
But I'd rather not have seen
And I'll hide away for another day

Do you believe in what you see
Motionless wheel nothing is real
Wasting my time in the waiting line
Do you believe in what you see

Everyone's saying different things to me
Different things to me
Everyone's saying different things to me
Different things to me

Everyone's saying different things to me
Different things to me
Everyone's saying different things to me
Different things to me

Everyone's saying different things to me
Different things to me
Everyone's taking everything they can
Everything they can

Everyone's taking everything they can
Everything they can

And everyone's saying different things to me
Different things to me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Garden State's song In The Waiting Line portray feelings of frustration, confusion, and disillusionment. The singer is tired of waiting and following the same monotonous routine, symbolized by the ticking clock and the motionless wheel. Throughout the song, the singer questions whether what they see and feel is real, and wonders if anyone else shares their doubts and disillusionment. They shout and scream in frustration, but ultimately decide to hide away for another day.

The repetition of the phrase "different things to me" highlights the singer's sense of isolation and detachment from others, who seem to have conflicting opinions and values. The lines "Nine to five living lies, everyday stealing time / Everyone's taking everything they can" express the pervasive feeling of dissatisfaction with the rat race and the constant struggle for survival.

The chorus "Do you believe in what you see / Motionless wheel nothing is real / Wasting my time in the waiting line" encapsulates the song's overall message. The waiting line represents the singer's feeling of being stuck in a rut, waiting for something to happen or change, but ultimately wasting their time. The motionless wheel suggests that life seems stagnant and meaningless, and that what we see and experience may not be the whole truth.

Overall, In The Waiting Line is a poignant and relatable song that touches on universal themes of disillusionment, frustration, and the search for purpose.

It's December 20th, 2021. I just woke up after dreaming that I was at a music festival, sitting around a big outdoor table with a bunch of traveler-type people, and launching together into an improvised acapella version of "In the Waiting Line" by Zero 7.

It felt so euphorically joyous to sing and make music again, especially together with strangers.

As we finished the song I looked over to my right and saw an older man who smiled and said, "Well done. That was a pretty good rendition."

I then recognized him as one of the band members who wrote the song, laughed, and replied, "Thank you... and thanks for writing such wonderful music."

His eyes lit up, and he responded "Would you like to hear how we wrote it? And then we can sing it again together with the band", gesturing to several band members in the crowd around us.

I laughed, said yes, and we did.

What a lovely dream.

We've all lost so much joy during this pandemic, including the joy of traveling, being together with those we know and getting to know new people, celebrating together, making music / dance / art / stories together, and doing so together without fear.

Sometimes it feels like that joyful freedom and spontaneity may never really come again, or at least not how we once knew it.

It brought a tear to my eyes to feel it again, even if only in a dream.

When I was an infant my family got our brand new minivan stolen right out of the driveway. About a week later the police chased the guy down in the minivan. He crashed it and ran away on foot, they never got him. They gave the minivan back to my dad, and the guy who stole it left a big ash tray and about 30 CDs in there. My dad always says it was completely worth getting the minivan stolen because he got to discover Zero 7, and he got the car covered by insurance anyway.
