Tracks
Gary Numan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where are the tracks?
Where are the lines?
Where are the tracks, dear?
Where is the time?

You were so cold
You were so slow
You were so old
And we were unsure

And I want your lines
And I want your time

And I want your face, dear
And you can have mine

Overall Meaning

At its core, "Tracks" is a melancholy love song. The singer begins the song by asking where the tracks and lines are, implying a sense of lost direction and confusion. He then turns his attention to a woman he once loved, reminiscing about their past relationship. He remembers fondly how he fell for her, but how they were separated by their differences. The woman was cold, slow, and old, while he was unsure of himself. Despite this, he still longs for her lines, time, and face. He offers himself up in exchange for her, a poignant sentiment that reflects the depth of his emotions.

I first saw Gary in concert in Sydney in 1980. He is one of the rare artists whose voice just doesn't change or gets better over time. So many artists can no longer sing the songs they sang in the 80's without it being cringeworthy. Gary is just like a fine wine. He keeps getting better!
