Gatas Parlament were the first Norwegian rappers to rap in Norwegian. The pioneers of Norwegian Rap, such as Warlocks or A-Team, rapped in English. Gatas Parlament started out in 1993, taking the name Kveldens Høydepunkt (Highlight of the Night). Don Martin did not take to the name, and it was therefore changed. Later, they attended a public speech by Carl I. Hagen, the chairman of the right-wing party Fremskrittspartiet, where they threw eggs and rotten fruit at Hagen. This caused Hagen to comment that gatens parlament ruled the country, and the three rappers stuck with the name (the riksmål-wording of gaten was dropped for gata, more fitting for their sociolect).
The band caused controversy in Norway with their video "Antiamerikansk Dans" (Anti American Dance) together with the Swedish rap artist Promoe. In addition, their website killhim.nu ("Kill him Now"), which put a bounty on the assassination of George W. Bush, caused the American embassy in Norway to react, and the website was subsequently shut down.

Nietzsche for uten ville livet

The lyrics of Gatas Parlament's song "Harde kår" delve into the challenges and struggles faced by individuals living in difficult circumstances. The opening lines of the song highlight the universal experience of hardship and chaos, depicted as everything appearing painted black, with increased stress and adversity taking hold. The imagery of feeling overwhelmed by poverty and powerlessness is vividly portrayed through phrases like "anfall av armod gir angrep av avmakt" (attacks of poverty lead to attacks of powerlessness). The lyrics suggest a sense of desperation and the need for a remedy or antidote to lift one's spirits and cope with the intense emotions bubbling inside.
The song switches focus to the role of music in providing solace and support during tough times. Gatas Parlament positions themselves as a source of music for those who need it the most, distancing themselves from the affluent and partying elites. They speak directly to those facing financial struggles and overwhelming responsibilities, emphasizing the power of music to offer a temporary escape and a source of catharsis amidst chaos. The lyrics capture the raw realities of life when basic needs are not met and responsibilities weigh heavily, juxtaposed with the desire for music that offers a release from stress and pressure, even in the absence of financial means.
The theme of harsh realities and societal injustices continues as the lyrics reference the pressures of war, lack of resources, police violence, and street gangs. The call to immerse oneself in music as a form of escapism and respite from these challenges resonates throughout the song. The notion of finding hope and relief through dance and music is a recurring motif, suggesting that despite the difficult circumstances, there is still room for joy and moments of respite. The lyrics encourage listeners to embrace music as a means of navigating through tough times and finding moments of reprieve to keep going despite the obstacles faced.
In the final section of the song, there is a call for resilience and persistence in the face of adversity. The lyrics urge listeners to hold onto hope, to dance away their pain, and to reject pessimism in favor of finding moments of brightness amidst the darkness. The idea of standing together, supporting each other, and persevering through hardships is emphasized, encapsulated in phrases like "vi skal greie oss sannsynligvis hvis" (we will probably manage if) and the reminder to hold each other close and lift each other up. The lyrics of "Harde kår" ultimately convey a message of solidarity, resilience, and the transformative power of music in navigating through life's challenges.
