Century Plant 2000
Geggy Tah Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here comes 2000 and I hear
There'll be a party
In every house there'll be dancing
And every door will be open
'Cause here comes 2000 and I hear
There' ll be a barbeque
On the patio of your neighbor's
Stereo will play your favorite song
The century plant grows to the top
The century plant blooms when it stops
'Cause the century plant knows
The century plant grows to the top
The century plant blooms when it stops
'Cause the century plant knows
Changes all are timing
By sincere sap on the inside
I am not afraid to be blooming
On a different day I'm renewing
Extract the soap from the century
Plants can offer us almost
Everything like cigarette papers
And Bible pages and strops for razors
The century plant grows to the top
The century plant blooms when it stops
'Cause the century plant knows
The century plant grows to the top
The century plant blooms when it stops
'Cause the century plant knows
Here comes 2000 and the times
They are a'changing

And if I' m still alive
At 2000 and 25 I' ll be singing

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Geggy Tah’s song Century Plant 2000 celebrate the coming of the new millennium and the changes that it brings. The singer anticipates a world of revelry, with parties in every house and dancing in every street. The door to every home will be open, and neighbors will gather together for a barbeque on the patio to the sounds of their favorite music. The century plant, a cactus with a long lifespan that blooms only once in its lifetime, serves as a metaphor for the timing of change. The plant grows slowly over time, reaching its peak before blooming and dying. The singer suggests that, like the century plant, our lives are also marked by cycles of growth and renewal.

The central message of the song is that change is natural and inevitable, and that we should embrace it rather than fear it. The singer is not afraid to bloom and renew, even if that means doing so on a different day than others. He sees the potential for growth and renewal in all things, including the century plant, which he describes as offering us “almost everything” from cigarette papers to Bible pages. As the song ends, the singer looks forward to the next century, anticipating the continued changes that will come and the songs that he will sing.

Loved this band. So underrated. David Byrne produced I believe..

chioke kendrick

this album (I'm pretty sure) was self-produced

Jim Snyder

Byrne didn't produce although he would be a major influence here. Greg Kurstin (guitarist) produced this gem.

Lucky to see them at Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA. One of the best concerts I have ever seen and I have seen ALL (most) of the 90’s bands. I bought the first album used on CD at “CD Trader”. There were CD players with headphones to try stuff out. You would be hard pressed to find a band more creative and brave than these guys. This song is def their most epic!
