Middle Of The Night
Geike Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
They way always do
And when they come for you in the middle of the night
Without alarming you
There's a downward slide on the rug red heat
Your chemical relief
Oh you may be low but nothing here is deep
Rival forces draw their firing line
See me through a pair of pale
Eyes in a half dream all the time
But wait up for the odd machine
To take us all the way 'round
From a tower so high
To a cold hard land a dreamer wide awake
Holding out for the one who will take her hand
A critical mistake
And when they come for you in the middle of the night
You'll rage and reverie
Oh, you may be low but nothing here's deep
Rival forces draw their firing line
See me through a pair of pale
Eyes in a half dream all the time
But wait up for the odd machine
To take us all the way 'round
Oh
Rival forces draw their firing line
See me through a pair of pale
Eyes in a half dream all the time
But wait up for the odd machine
To take us all the way 'round
The lyrics of Geike's "Middle of the Night" suggest a narrative of potential danger that lurks unseen in the shadows of the night. The opening lines declare that "they'll come for you in the middle of the night," an ambiguous "they" who always arrive without warning or sign. The anxiety and danger implied by these lyrics are further accentuated by the line "there's a downward slide on the rug red heat, your chemical relief," suggesting that the singer may be utilizing drugs as a means of escape or coping with the threats their environment presents.
Throughout the song, the lyrics continue to evoke an atmosphere of uncertainty and tension, reinforced by the refrain of "rival forces drawing their firing line." The sense of dread and looming violence is further heightened by the line "see me through a pair of pale eyes in a half dream all the time," conjuring up an image of someone keeping one eye open, half asleep, in case danger forces them to be alert. The song's overall mood seems to suggest that the singer is in a state of constant vigilance, aware of the threats and adversaries that await around every corner, and ready to defend themselves if necessary.
Overall, Geike's "Middle of the Night" presents a compelling portrayal of someone caught in the crosshairs of danger, never quite sure when it will strike or from which direction, but always ready to fight back.
