Summers graduated from Duncanville High School in 1957 and attended Arlington State College, now known as the University of Texas at Arlington. That same year, he formed the rockabilly band The Rebels and performed on Joe Bill's Country Picnic on KRLD, where they were spotted by songwriter Jed Tarver. This led to the band being signed by newly-found Jan Records. Their first record was released on February 1, 1958, under the name of Gene Summers & His Rebels.

Big Blue Diamand
Gene Summers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Instead of that little band of gold
Big diamond, big blue diamonds tell a story
Of a love that no one man could ever hold
[Chorus]
She wanted more than I had money to buy
So she left me for a stranger I've been told
For the love behind that little band of gold
Big diamond, big blue diamonds how they sparkle
But what can they do to warm your soul
When you're lonesome in the moonlight and need some lovin'
Big diamond, big blue diamonds are so cold
[Chorus]
The lyrics to Gene Summers's song "Big Blue Diamond" tell a story of a failed relationship where the woman chose material wealth over true love. The singer describes the big blue diamonds on her finger, emphasizing the contrast between them and the little band of gold that they replaced. The diamonds, as grand as they are, tell a sad story of a love that was not strong enough to withstand the allure of wealth. The chorus reveals the underlying issue: the woman wanted more than the singer could provide financially, leading her to leave him for another man. Now she would trade those expensive diamonds for the love behind the little band of gold, but it's too late.
The second verse uses vivid imagery to convey the emptiness of material wealth. The diamonds might sparkle, but they cannot warm the soul of someone who is lonely and in need of love. The repetition of "big diamond, big blue diamond" reminds the listener of the stark contrast between what the woman has now and what she used to have, and what she traded it for.
Overall, the song paints a picture of what happens when wealth is valued over love. The big blue diamonds may be visually stunning, but they are ultimately as cold as the relationships built solely on them.
