I hope this episode makes Josh & Jimmy feel like they can take a day off every now and again and the show will continue to be in good hands.

When a long lived playgroup started to disband, it has been hard to adjust from playing Magic together because they are my friends to making new friends because I want to play Magic. I appreciate the encouragement to just put myself out there.

josh and jimmy agree almost too much, it would be nice for a rotating third guest. after 5 years we have heard alot of the same opinions and one of them by now has generally conviced the other on every opinion they originally disagreed on so they have gotten fairly homogeneous.

@Brandon Guthrie that doesnt mean you can not show some form of human decency when you are at a public convention. When you struggle that hard with your personal situation, you should not play a luxury hobby like magic is in first place, and get your life sorted out. But stuff like MTG attracts many people coping for their shitty life. Having mental ilness isnt an excuse for behaving bad, talking from experience as someone with severe bipolar disorder. Also, in america people seem to often have some pretty shit takes, like thinking showering is some sort of social convention and therefore bad, because animals dont shower --> therefore hygience = evil. Even the prof once mentioned he had this attitude in his teens/early 20s, and my mind just blows on how you can get to these kinds of stupid conclusions

The best way to connect with new playgroups? Just, be nice. Trust me. It's a great thing. It goes both ways. First time out? Let people know and just, be nice. Misplay? It's alright. Just be nice about it. Other player isn't a "pro" or a "veteran" and it's their first tournament? That's okay, be nice and patient and help. Not condescending and critical. Someone asks "what does that do?" Don't talk down to them, show them the card and inform them kindly. I've seen so many people put off from MTG just because an established "playgroup" treated them poorly for no reason or they were yelled at or scolded during a game when they were first coming out. It's unfortunate and equally unnecessary and ultimately doesn't help build the community of players. Many of us have our social cliques and established playgroups, but I think it takes a lot for some people to work up the courage to go head first into an environment they feel not-so-knowledgeable in or anxious about, hoping that someone will just be kind, understanding, welcoming and helpful as opposed to being derogatorily talked down upon for some BS during a casual FNM. Just be nice to people, people. I watched (actually, I should say, intervened when) a 40+ year old grown man yell at a 13/14 year old kid about how some of his cards had "markings" on his sleeves... first FNM for the kid, first game. Really? Markings? Yes, I'm sure young Timmy with his home brew and handed down, worn out ultra pros was trying to pull a sleight of hand at his first tournament just after asking you "we start at 20, right?". I bought him some new yellow sleeves (they were on sale and I'm not loaded people) helped him re sleeve and told Richard (that's what we will call the older "man") to relax because I'm sure his planeswalker points won't be affected so he can get his pro invite to worlds with his awesome attitude.... man. Just be nice people. It's free and easy. Have fun. Be nice. Unless that person's being a total dink. Then of course you should totally be OVERLY NICE and kill them with kindness.

That's actually pretty encouraging. Until now, my only opponent outside of MtGA was my brother and his deckbuilding kind of lacks direction so he isn't that much of a help when it comes to improving, but I plan to visit some FNM events, at least when they start doing those again. Thing is, I'm probably going to be the youngest person present and I'm didn't really level my social skills when I had the chance to and of I'm not that experienced in playing the game, so people getting mad at me during my first visit would pretty much ruin my day, probably even my entire week.
Sadly, there are no stores in my area, so the nearest events require a one hour drive. Still, I guess it's time to get myself into the real world.

Experience from going to anime cons and playing EDH there and the few times a playgroup I’m in got a person, my favorite thing that happens from playing with new people is when we share odd card choices that we think are cool.

Like one game, me, who played Tetsuko Umezawa, and the new person at the table, who played Mirko Vosk, ended having VERY similar strategies and we both sat down afterwards and compared and took pictures of each other’s cards.

I know what you mean. Recently joined a new play group and we play each week. Every week someone manages to play at least one card that I had considered my personal super secret tech like Tomb's Stairwell ... I had never seen anyone but me play that card and was really surprised.

I've been working on my Final projetc for my UX course and it's an app where you can "find" and meet new playgroups.
I've been stuck on some subjects for a couple of days and this video helped a LOT.

Hearing about the growth of EDH as a format got me back into the game. It's one thing to have the cards, but another to have the friends to enjoy it with. I was actually really worried when I moved to Fort Wayne for college that I wouldn't have anyone to play with. But, I went to the LGS and they sent me to a Discord server that had almost every commander player in the area on it and it's been super awesome getting to play with a bunch of different play groups.

Tips for playing in new playgroups.
I find it super helpful to keep track of life totals on paper, and when you introduce yourself get everybody in your pods names and use them to keep track of their life totals. I see some people do this but they use the commanders name or no names at all. If you are playing at a magic fest this might be less relevant, but I am terrible at remembering people’s names especially when I’m playing a game of commander. Try to use their names often in conversation and gameplay, this will help you remember their name and make you more personable, opening the door to conversations and friendships.

Definitely recommend taking a commander deck or two when you visit far away places. I’ve brought decks to Ireland Switzerland Italy and Washington state! Being able to head out on a Friday or Thursday night when I’m traveling alone knowing I’m going to meet some like minded individuals is amazing. Definitely recommend it, I’ve dominated some fnms with borrowed modern decks and it’s an amazing way to interact with the locals and get some wonderful experiences!

This has been my favorite non-Game Knights episode of the Command Zone. I'd definitely sub a channel with the three of you at the helm. You seemed to have an easy dynamic that didn't feel forced or scripted. I especially liked Sydney. She. Was. Hilarious.

Anyway, there were a lot of great points made here, but when it comes to Rule 0, sometimes I feel pressured into acquiescing to something despite my reservations. Recently, a guy at a new LGS wanted to use Ashiok, Dream Render (the one from War of the Spark), and I politely said that I felt it was too good to have a tutor-hosing graveyard obliterator in the command zone. He obliged, but I could tell he was salty about it.

And when it comes to touching other people's cards, I definitely agree that theres' an etiquette there, but when you steal an opponent's permanent (in-game, obviously), it's sometimes awkward to ask. I mean, it's mine now, right?

Great episode! I'm one of those people who doesn't like people handling my cards. I've had people get offended that I won't let them use my decks or touch any cards I own if they are eating food. I keep things pristine and understand not everyone does but I've invested so much, time, energy, love, and money on my cards. Wish everyone was respectful.
