Malick's use of this piece was so haunting. After seeing the movie, the piece stuck in my mind for days, so much so that I finally had to figure out what it was. That was no mean feat in the pre-internet days. It involved hours in the library poring over the periodical index until I found a story about the film that referred to the music. Then I had to go to the university music library to actually hear the piece again. Good times.

Fascinating story I'm probably a little younger than you my early searches for things like this involved asking Encarta95 if that failed my dad was the next best bet, this was before we had Internet. The music is sublime

I saw this when Encore premired as a premium channel. I don't remember anything about the movie anymore, but remember this piece note for note. I would grab the TV Guide and watch the movie everytime it aired just to hear it. It aired at 3am on a school day and I set my alarm 😅
I explained to my parents it was an accident then watched it on near mute until I knew it was playing! I still get giddy as a "that kid" watching with my face inches from that 19" TV and remember putting my ear to the speaker when it played as my heart raced! I finally recorded it onto both sides of a cassette and would flip it for hours. Good times indeed!

Song was also used in Finding Forester with Sean Connery.

What impressed me most about this film is that despite its subject matter or synopsis you would think it was going to be a heavy film like say "natural born killers" or "clockwork orange" yet Badlands has this totally carefree and upbeat feel to it despite the implications. .......it has a really nostalgic feel to it

It was used in the movie "True Romance " an homage to this movie and the outcome. Please watch " True Romance " it was clearly written by Tarantino, directed by Tony Scott. Great movie, first time I saw James Gandolfini (I knew he would be a star) and find where is Val Kilmer) best movie in my pre- 20s.

@Lester Escoto Strictly speaking the theme from True Romance is called "You're So Cool" by Hand Zimmer. Very similar to this work but just different enough to avoid plagiarism.

Yes I believe Quentin T borrowed heavily(besides copying this very music) in his film True Romance, another great film
