In 2004, George Canyon competed in Nashville Star 2. He placed 2nd in the competition, but became very well known in Canada and garnered much support, being the only Canadian to make the cut for the competition. Since the competition has ended, he has received many accolades from fans and the industry alike. These include a number 1 hit about a still-born baby called "My Name," a Juno Award for Best Country Recording of the Year (for his album One Good Friend), and, most recently four Canadian Country Music Awards (CCMAs) including Male Vocalist of the Year and the Fan Choice Award.
Canyon is known for his support of SHARE (Share Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support, Inc. serves those whose lives are touched by the tragic death of a baby through early pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or in the first few months of life) and Animas Canada (company who makes insulin pumps, which George himself uses). His song "My Name" is reflective of why he has associated himself with SHARE.
George says:
"I co-wrote this song with Gordie Sampson from the perspective of an unborn baby. A close friend and his wife had a miscarriage, and I witnessed the pain they went through losing a baby. I wanted to write a song to help people cope with that trauma and somehow bring a positive light to the subject"

For the hundreth time again
And he hears the words she said
But he can't let the truth sink in
It won't sink in
You think he woulda learned by now
No one ever showed him how
We laugh, we cry
Can't stay alive between the lone
And goodbye
So we win some, we lose some
We lonesome
She looks out her window
At the thousand souls below
How easy it would be
To close her eyes and
Just let go just let go
You think we woulda learned by now
It's not like no one showed us how
We fly, we fall, we run
We crawl, we laugh, we cry
Can't stay alive between the lone
And goodbye
So we win some
We lose some we lonesome
We fly, we fall, we run
We crawl, we laugh, we cry
Can't stay alive between the lone
And goodbye
So we win some, we lose some
We lonesome
We fly
(lonesome)
We fly
(lonesome)
George Canyon's song "Lonesome" is a powerful ballad about the struggles we face in life and the inevitability of loss. The song touches upon themes of missed opportunities, failed relationships, and the feeling of being alone amidst a crowd.
The first verse describes a man who has been given one last chance by his partner, but he cannot seem to understand the gravity of the moment. He has failed to learn from his past mistakes and is unable to comprehend the truth of his situation. The chorus expands on this idea of life's ups and downs, of how we soar and crash, laugh and cry, but ultimately find ourselves alone in the end.
The second verse takes a dark turn as we are introduced to a woman who looks out her window at the world below. She contemplates the ease with which she could end it all and just "let go." The verse ends with the chilling reminder that we should have learned by now, that we have been shown how to live and how to cope with life's difficulties.
In conclusion, "Lonesome" is a thought-provoking song that encourages listeners to reflect on their own lives and experiences. It highlights the importance of being present in the moment, learning from our mistakes, and finding ways to connect with others in the face of adversity.
