"Spinning the Wheel" is sung as if to admonish a lover who is out seeking casual encounters with strangers.
The singer begins by questioning why it is morning and yet their lover has not returned home. The singer asserts they would rather end the relationship than accept constantly fearing the lover returning with a transmissible infection. The singer equates the behaviour to gambling; one popular form Roulette involves "Spinning the Wheel".
The singer then wonders if the lover is pursuing the encounters because of the thrill of danger and the unknown. The singer goes on to question their lover's professed love, if the lover is risking transmission of a fatal infection; most likely a reference to the human Immunodeficiency virus. This verse makes 'Russian Roulette" a more directly comparable gamble. Finally the singer dismisses the lover's promises of attempts at greater fidelity as empty promises.

You ain't home
Can't help thinking that's strange
Yeah, yeah
Baby I just want you to know
I won't go through it again
Yeah, yeah
Those clouds are closing in
Baby love
And I will not accept this as a part of my life (baby love)
I will not live in fear of what may be (baby love)
And the lessons I have learned
I would rather be alone than watch you
Spinning that wheel for me
You've got a thing about danger
Ain't you getting what you want from me
Ain't you getting what you want from me
You've got a thing about strangers
Baby that's what we used to be (baby that's what we used to be)
You've got a thing about danger baby
I guess the hungry just can't see
One of these days you're gonna bring some home to me
Six o'clock in the morning you ain't phoned
I can't help thinking that's strange (yeah, yeah)
It seems that everybody takes their chances these days
Oh yeah, we're standing in the rain
Baby love
And I will not accept this as a part of my life (baby love)
I will not live in fear of what may be (baby love, oh oh oh)
And the lessons that I learned
I would rather be alone than watch you spinning
Spinning that wheel for me
You've got a thing about danger
Ain't you getting what you want from me (baby don't you love that trash)
You've got a thing about strangers
Baby that's what we used to be (I know you're always chasing that ass)
You've got a thing about danger baby (like it's going out of fashion baby)
I guess the hungry just can't see (just can't see)
One of these days you gonna bring some home to me
Baby love
How can you love me?
When you are playin' with my life? (Save me love)
You say, give me time and I'll do better, I swear (baby love)
Give me time and I'll lead you back to despair
You've got a thing about danger
Ain't you getting what you want from me? (And I don't wanna go back there)
You've got a thing about strangers
Baby that's what we used to be? (I don't wanna go back there)
You've got a thing about danger baby
I guess the hungry just can't see (never going back to that, that's a fact, baby)
One of these days you're gonna bring some home to me
To me
To me

Spinning the wheel
The song "Spinning the Wheel" by George Michael talks about a tumultuous relationship where one partner is not loyal and constantly puts the other person in danger. The lyrics suggest that the singer has had enough and does not want to live in fear of what may be. The first verse talks about the singer waiting for their partner to come home at five and six in the morning, and how the partner's behavior is strange. The singer decides that they will not tolerate this kind of behavior anymore, and that they would rather be alone than watch their partner keep spinning the wheel.
The chorus talks about how the partner has a thing about danger and strangers, and how he seems to get what he wants from the singer but is never satisfied. The singer decides that he does not want to live in fear and be a part of the partner's dangerous life. The partner promises to do better but the singer remains skeptical. In the end, the singer realizes that they cannot continue with the relationship and that the partner may end up bringing danger into the singer's life.

It feels genuinely timeless in both directions. If you told me it was a cover of a song from the Jazz Age, I'd believe it.
