The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.
Me Against the Music
Glee Cast Lyrics

Grab a partner take it down
It's me against the music (uh huh)
It's just me (and me)
Yeah, c'mon
Hey Britney?
Are you ready?
No one cares
It's whippin' my hair, it's pullin' my waist
To hell with stares
The sweat is drippin' all over my face
No one's there
I'm the only one dancin' up in this place
Tonight I'm here
Feel the beat of the drum, gotta keep it that bass
I'm up against the speaker, tryin' to take on the music
It's like a competition, me against the beat
I wanna get in the zone (get in the zone)
I wanna get in the zone (I wanna get in the zone)
If you really wanna battle, saddle up and get your rhythm
Tryin' to hit it, chic-a-tah
In a minute I'ma take a you on (I'ma take you on)
I'ma take a you on (I'ma take you on)
Hey, hey, hey
All my people on the floor
Let me see you dance
Let me see ya
All my people wantin' more
Let me see you dance
I wanna see ya
All my people 'round and 'round
Let me see you dance
Let me see ya
All my people in the crowd
Let me see you dance
I wanna see ya
So how would you like a friendly competition?
Let's take on the song
Let's take on the song, let's take on the song
It's you and me baby, we're the music
Time to party all night long
All night long, all night long (yeah, let's go)
We're almost there
I'm feelin' it bad and I can't explain
My soul is bare
My hips are movin' at a rapid pace (I'm going crazy)
Baby feel it burn
From the tip of my toes, runnin' through my veins
And now's your turn
Let me see what you got, don't hesitate
I'm up against the speaker, tryin' to take on the music
It's like a competition, me against the beat
I wanna get in the zone (I wanna get in the zone)
I wanna get in the zone (I wanna get in the zone)
If you really wanna battle, saddle up and get your rhythm
Tryin' to hit it, chic-a-tah
In a minute I'ma take a you on (I'ma take you on)
I'ma take a you on (I'ma take you on)
Hey, hey, hey
All my people on the floor
Let me see you dance
Let me see ya
All my people wantin' more
Let me see you dance
I wanna see ya
All my people 'round and 'round
Let me see you dance
Let me see ya
All my people in the crowd
Let me see you dance
I wanna see ya
Get on the floor, baby lose control
Just work your body and let it go
If you wanna party, just grab somebody
Hey Britney we can dance all night long
Hey Britney, you say you wanna lose control
Come over here I got somethin' to show ya
Sexy lady, I'd rather see you bare your soul
If you think you're so hot, better show me what you got
All my people in the crowd, let me see you dance
C'mon Britney lose control, watch you take it down
Get on the floor, baby lose control
Just work your body and let it go
If you wanna party, just grab somebody
Hey Britney we can dance all night long
All my people on the floor
Say let me see you dance
Let me see ya
All my people wantin' more
Say let me see you dance
I wanna see ya
All my people 'round and 'round
Say let me see you dance
Let me see ya
All my people in the crowd
Say let me see you dance
I wanna see ya
All my people in the crowd, let me see you dance
C'mon Britney take it down, make the music dance
All my people 'round and 'round, party all night long
C'mon Britney lose control, watch you take it down
The song "Me Against the Music" by the Glee Cast featuring Britney Spears is essentially a call to dance and let loose. The lyrics suggest that "me against the music" is like a competition, but it's not hostile; rather, it's a way to let the rhythm and bass take over and get "in the zone." Spears and the Glee Cast challenge each other to a "friendly competition," where they "take on the song" and dance "all night long." As the lyrics progress, Spears and the Glee Cast urge their audience to join in and dance together.
The lyrics also suggest a sense of liberation and carefree abandon. Spears sings about the music "whippin' [her] hair" and "pullin' [her] waist" as she loses herself in the rhythm. The Glee Cast talks about feeling the music "burn" from the "tip of [their] toes" to the "veins" and encourages the audience to let go and "lose control" on the dance floor.
Overall, "Me Against the Music" is a high-energy, upbeat song about letting go and losing oneself in the joy of dance and music.
