The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.
Somethin' Stupid

Until you think you have the time
To spend an evening with me
And if we go some place to dance
I know that there′s a chance
You won't be leaving with me
And have a drink or two
And then I go and spoil it all
By saying something stupid
Like "I love you"
I can see it in your eyes
That you despise the same old lines
You heard the night before
And though it′s just a line to you
For me it's true
It never seemed so right before
I practice every day
To find some clever lines to say
To make the meaning come true
But then I think I'll wait
Until the evening gets late
That I′m alone with you
The time is right
Your perfume fills my head
The stars get red
And oh, the night′s so blue
And then I go and spoil it all
By saying something stupid
Like "I love you"
The time is right
Your perfume fills my head
The stars get red
And oh, the night's so blue
And then I go and spoil it all
By saying something stupid
Like "I love you"
"I love you"
"I love you"
"I love you"
"I love you"
The lyrics to Glee Cast's song "Somethin' Stupid" depict a person who is infatuated with someone and desperately wants to express their love, but fears rejection and the potential for appearing foolish. The singer acknowledges that they are willing to wait in line for the other person's attention, hoping for an opportunity to spend time together. However, they are aware that their chances of having a deeper connection are slim, as the other person may not reciprocate their feelings.
The lyrics further describe the singer's desire to impress the other person and find the perfect words to express their love. They practice every day to come up with clever lines, hoping to make the words meaningful and genuine. However, they struggle with knowing the right moment to say these words. They want to wait until they are alone together, until the timing feels right, and until the atmosphere is perfect.
Ultimately, the singer recognizes that they often ruin the moment by blurting out something foolish, like saying "I love you." They are aware that these words may not be received well, especially if they have been used by others before. Despite this self-awareness, the singer is unable to control the impulse to express their love, even if it risks spoiling the connection they have with the other person.
Overall, "Somethin' Stupid" captures the vulnerability, fear, and longing that can come with unrequited love and the struggle to express one's feelings.
Line by Line Meaning
I know I stand in line,
I recognize that I patiently wait my turn,
Until you think you have the time
Until you believe you have a moment
To spend an evening with me
To dedicate an entire evening with me
And if we go some place to dance
If we choose to go to a venue for dancing
I know that there's a chance
I am aware that there is a possibility
You won't be leaving with me
You may not depart with me
And afterwards we drop into a quiet little place
And subsequently we enter a serene, cozy spot
And have a drink or two
And consume a couple of drinks
And then I go and spoil it all
But then I ruin the entire situation
By saying something stupid
By uttering something foolish
Like 'I love you'
Such as expressing 'I have deep affection for you'
I can see it in your eyes
I can perceive it from your gaze
That you despise the same old lines
That you detest these repetitive phrases
You heard the night before
Which you heard on the previous evening
And though it's just a line to you
And though it is merely a sentence to you
For me it's true
For me, it holds genuine meaning
It never seemed so right before
It has never felt so correct in the past
I practice every day
I engage in daily rehearsals
To find some clever lines to say
To discover some witty phrases to utter
To make the meaning come true
To make the significance become a reality
But then I think I'll wait
But then I contemplate waiting
Until the evening gets late
Until the night advances
That I'm alone with you
That I am in solitude with you
The time is right
The moment is opportune
Your perfume fills my head
The fragrance of your scent occupies my mind
The stars get red
The stars appear reddish
And oh, the night's so blue
And oh, the night feels melancholic
And then I go and spoil it all
And then I ruin everything
By saying something stupid
By uttering something foolish
Like 'I love you'
Such as expressing 'I have deep affection for you'
The time is right
The moment is opportune
Your perfume fills my head
The fragrance of your scent occupies my mind
The stars get red
The stars appear reddish
And oh, the night's so blue
And oh, the night feels melancholic
And then I go and spoil it all
