During the late 1920s and early 1930s, Miller managed to earn a living working as a freelance trombonist in several bands. His first band was formed in 1937 but failed to distinguish itself and eventually broke up.
Following the break-up of his first band, Miller realized that he needed to develop a unique sound, and decided to make the clarinet play a melodic line with a tenor saxophone on the same note, while three other saxophones harmonized. With this sound combination, the Miller band that became the most popular was born in 1938. After a shaky start, it made his new band a nationwide hit.
In 1942, Miller joined the United States Army Air Forces where he continued his musical career with the Army Air Force Band.
On December 15, 1944, Miller was to fly from the United Kingdom to Paris, France, to play for the soldiers who had recently liberated Paris. His plane departed from RAF Twinwood Farm in Clapham, Bedfordshire and disappeared while flying over the English Channel. No trace of the aircrew, passengers or plane has ever been found. Miller's status is missing in action.
His music is still iconic of the time period in which he lived and continues to draw thousands of fans of all age groups.
Glenn Miller was a popular visitor to Bedford and its American Air force bases. He is still remembered to this day by the people of Bedford with a bronze bust displayed on the front of the towns Corn Exchange, and more recently, what remains of the Twinwoods Airfield being renovated as a Glenn Miller Museum and outdoor event site

On Blueberry Hill when I found you
The moon stood still on Blueberry Hill
And lingered until my dreams came true
(The wind in the willow played
Love's sweet melody
But all of those vows we made
Though we're apart, you're part of me still
For you were my thrill on Blueberry Hill
(I found my thrill)
Come climb the hill with me, baby
(On Blueberry Hill)
We'll see what we shall see
(On Blueberry Hill)
I'll bring my horn with me
(When I found you)
I'll be wit' you where berries are blue
(The moon stood still)
Each afternoon we'll go
(On Blueberry Hill)
Higher than the moon we'll go
(And lingered until)
Then, to a weddin' in June we'll go
(My dreams came true)
Ba-ba-da-de-buzz-buzz va-de-n-da-day
The wind in the willow played (Do you really love me)
Love's sweet melody (As I love you)
But all of those vows we made (Will you still remember)
Were never to be (When the night is through)
Though we're apart, you're part of me still
For you were my thrill on Blueberry Hill
The song "Blueberry Hill" is a classic love song written by Vincent Rose, with lyrics by Larry Stock and Al Lewis. The song was first recorded by Gene Autry, but it was the version by Fats Domino that became famous. Glenn Miller's version of the song was released after his death in 1944 and became a hit, solidifying the song's place as a classic of American popular music.
The opening lines of the song, "I found my thrill on Blueberry Hill", describe the feeling of finding love and happiness in unexpected places. The line "On Blueberry Hill when I found you" suggests that the singer has found the person they love on a physical location, but that location is not as important as the feeling of being in love. The line "The moon stood still on Blueberry Hill" creates a romantic atmosphere, suggesting the magic of falling in love can make everything else fade into the background. The final lines of the song, "For you were my thrill on Blueberry Hill", summarize the song's theme of finding happiness in love.
The lyrics also include a contrast between the sweet sounds of love and the reality of heartbreak. The lines "The wind in the willow played love's sweet melody / But all of those vows we made were never to be" suggest that the promises made in love are not always fulfilled, and that even when love is at its sweetest, it can still end in disappointment.
