The Glenn Miller Orchestra was originally formed in 1937 by Glenn Miller. It's unique, tight and popular sound was produced by arranging for a clarinet and tenor saxophone playing melody, while three other saxophones played the harmony. Miller had already formed one band before this in 1936, but he dissolved it as he considered it too similar to other bands of the era.
After the disappearance (and presumed death) of Miller in 1944, the band was reconstituted under the direction of Tex Beneke, its lead tenor saxophonist, singer, and one of Miller's longtime close friends. A few years later, the Miller estate, having parted ways with Beneke, hired Ray McKinley, principal drummer in Miller's Army Air Force band, to organize a new "ghost band" in 1956. The group went on, playing as a tribute to Miller's memory.
The Glenn Miller Orchestra continued to record and perform under various leaders starting in 1956. It is still touring today. Currently, trombonist Larry O'Brien leads the band.

Careless
Glenn Miller Orchestra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That's why we answered loves call
Now that you've got what you wanted
You don't seem to want it at all
Careless
Now that you've got me loving you
You're careless
You break up appointments and think you are smart
If you're not careful you'll break my heart
Careless
Now that my bridges all are burned
You're careless
Careless in things where I'm concerned
Are you just careless, as you seem to be
Or do you just care less for me?
The Glenn Miller Orchestra's song "Careless" discusses the theme of love and the indifference that can arise after the initial thrill of being in love has died down. The song begins by addressing the fact that love was initially what the subject of the song wanted, and that they answered its call. However, now that the subject has the love they were seeking, they no longer seem to want it at all.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the subject's carelessness, particularly in relation to their newfound love. Despite the fact that the singer is now in love with the subject, they still act carelessly in various ways. They break appointments and seemingly take pleasure in doing so, making them appear naive and even careless. The singer warns the subject that if they continue to act carelessly, they will ultimately break their heart.
The final lines of the song question whether the subject is careless because they are truly indifferent or if it is because they care less for the singer. The lyrics leave the answer to this question up to interpretation, forcing the listener to consider the motivations and emotions of the song's subject.

Early in his career in Northern California, Eddy Howard was billed as an English Tenor. The band joke was that he was the English Tenor from Woodland.
