Animal Mother
Good Tiger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No silence from a number with no identity
Let me tell you what was seen so far away

Just know that

Not one second of film was wasted
Capture the travesty
Not one second
I'll grant you this interview
Coming back a broken man wasn't part of the plan

I ran into the fire
With expectations that I would be celebrated

Not one second of film was wasted
Capture the travesty
Not one second
I'll grant you this interview
Coming back a broken man wasn't part of the plan

The common perception was that our fears were alive
Don't listen

Just know that

Not one second of film was wasted
Capture the travesty
Not one second
I'll grant you this interview
Coming back a broken man wasn't part of the plan

I can't make sense of this

Overall Meaning

"Animal Mother" by Good Tiger is a song that deals with the horrors of war and the disillusionment that often follows soldiers when they return home. The first verse is about an anonymous soldier who is interviewed about his experiences, but he has no identity beyond his service number. The soldier speaks of the travesties he witnessed during his time in combat, emphasizing that every moment of it was captured on film. Despite this, he feels that no one truly understands what he went through and that he is now a broken man.

The second verse is about the soldier's perception of how he would be celebrated upon his return from the war, only to find that the reality is far different than his expectations. He has come back from the war a changed person, and the emotional toll it has taken on him was not part of the plan. The chorus is a repetition of the soldiers' words, emphasizing the idea that every moment of the tragedy was captured and not a second of it was wasted.

The bridge is a message to those who have not experienced the horrors of war: don't listen to the common perception that soldiers' fears are just in their heads, because those fears are very much alive. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, highlighting the idea that the soldier's trauma was not only captured on film but is also a never-ending reality that he must endure.
