I think I should go now
I'm going to Nebraska
I'm leaving tomorrow
I'll purchase grasslands
Good luck to you all
If there was just somehow
Undo the tied wound
To redo it all
I'm going to Nebraska
Cause my head's in the grasslands
Though my feet are not even
To stand in the ground
I'm going to Nebraska
I'm leaving tomorrow
I'll purchase some aspirin
Good luck to you all
If there was just somehow
Switch off the power
And re-root the wiring
We'd all have a ball
I'm going to Nebraska
Cause I long for the grasslands
Get a job as a ranch hand
Good luck to you all
I'm catching a greyhound
I'm bent on the eastbound
Can't wait for my new town
Good luck to you all
I'm catching a greyhound
I'm bent on the eastbound
Won't be coming back 'round
Good luck to you all
The song "Nebraska" by Grandaddy is a contemplative and introspective piece exploring the idea of escape and starting anew. The first stanza talks about how the singer might "go now" to Nebraska, leaving everything behind. This could refer to a physical move or a mental escape from the current situation. The purchase of grasslands and aspirin might be symbolic of starting a new life and letting go of past pain and ailments. The second stanza continues this theme with the idea of "switching off the whole town" and undoing the "tied wound" to redo everything. This could be seen as a desire to start from scratch and leave everything behind.
The repeated line "I'm going to Nebraska" is almost like a mantra, emphasizing the desire to escape and start anew. The idea of "longing for the grasslands" and getting a job as a ranch hand suggests a desire for simplicity and a return to nature. The final stanza reinforces this theme with the singer taking a greyhound bus to the east, leaving everything behind with no intention of looking back.
Overall, "Nebraska" is a song about the desire for escape and starting anew. The repetition of the line "I'm going to Nebraska" emphasizes this desire, with the purchase of grasslands, aspirin, and the desire to be a ranch hand all symbolizing a new beginning.
