Fool in the End
Graveyard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I remember when it hit me,
Couldn’t see a way back.
The pedal of the story
The pressure and the thrill.

What can you expect when it all began
What did you think your music was to bring?
Feel like a need a thousand years and a lot of riot to all,
The time I spent in waiting is a lifetime in itself.

‘cause so many fools now call you the friend,
I hope you know that you are one of them.

Why did you think that you can have it all for free?
Could you see me, I was actual fun,
Did you think I’ll ever be an easy run?
Can’t you see that you’re the fool in the end,
You’re the fool in the end.

It’s been right all my life,
You lend me something I chose.
I know that I once more really raised those blues.
Sometimes you should leave and you can let it be,
It’s been a lot on my life, it ain’t something I chose,
I got the restless blues, I got the restless blues.

Why did you think that you can have it all for free?
Could you see me, I was actual fun,
Did you think I’ll ever be an easy run?
Can’t you see that you’re the fool in the end,
You’re the fool in the end.
Why did you think that you can have it all for free?
Could you see me, I was actual fun,
Did you think I’ll ever be an easy run?
Can’t you see that you’re the fool in the end,
You’re the fool in the end.

You’re the fool in the end

Overall Meaning

The opening stanza of Graveyard's "Fool in the End" recounts a moment in the singer's life when they were seemingly lost and unable to see their way back. The line "the pedal of the story" creates a metaphor for the acceleration of one's life story and the thrill and pressure that comes along with it. It then asks the listener what they thought their music would bring, inquiring as to their motivations and intentions in pursuing music. The following stanza laments the time wasted in waiting and the inevitable sense of time being wasted when one is in a state of limbo. The chorus is a pointed attack on someone who believed they could have it all for free, despite the singer being aware of their true nature. The song comes to an end with the repeated line, "You're the fool in the end," emphasizing the message of the song.
