Angel on Fire
Halsey Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning | Line by Line Meaning
Broken bottles all around my feet
They came again in the night under crescent moon
Didn't wake me in my sleep
'Cause they talk and drink and laugh 'bout things
And fall in love in my backyard
I hide and cower in the corner
Conversation's getting hard
'Cause nobody seems to ask about me anymore
And nobody seems to care 'bout anything I think
And nobody seems to recognize me in the crowd
In the background screaming, "everybody, look at me"
And I'm faded away, you know, I used to be on fire
And I'm faded away, you know, I used to be on fire
I'm standing in the ashes of who I used to be
And I'm faded away, you know, I used to be on fire
You know, I used to be on fire
You know, I used to be on fire, fire
I used to be a darling starlet like a centerpiece
Had the whole world wrapped around my ring
I flew too closely to the sun that's setting in the east
And now I'm melting from my wings
'Cause I'd laugh and drink and talk 'bout things
And fall in love in my backyard
Now it's my own anxiety
That makes the conversation hard
'Cause nobody seems to ask about me anymore
And nobody ever cares 'bout anything I think
And nobody seems to recognize me in the crowd
In the background screaming, "everybody, look at me"
And I'm faded away, you know, I used to be on fire
And I'm faded away, you know, I used to be on fire
I'm standing in the ashes of who I used to be
But I'm faded away, you know, I used to be on fire
You know, I used to be on fire
You know, I used to be on fire
Well, I used to be on fire
You know, I used to be on fire
You know, I used to be on fire
You know, I used to be on fire, fire
The lyrics to Halsey's song "Angel on Fire" tell the story of a once-great star who has since fallen from grace. The first verse paints a picture of chaos in the narrator's living room, with broken bottles all around her feet. The reason for this mess becomes clear in the second half of the verse, where we learn that the narrator's friends (or perhaps hangers-on) have come over to drink, talk, and laugh, all without really acknowledging her or her feelings. The chorus laments the fact that the narrator is "faded away" from her former self, no longer the shining star she once was. She feels invisible in a way, like nobody really cares about anything she feels or thinks.
The second verse expands on this theme, with the narrator reminiscing about her former life as a "darling starlet." She had the world at her feet, but flew too close to the sun and ended up "melting from [her] wings." Now, she is plagued by anxiety, which makes conversation hard for her. She feels alone, as if nobody really cares about her anymore. The chorus repeats this idea of fading away, with the phrase "you know, I used to be on fire" acting as a refrain throughout.
Overall, the lyrics to "Angel on Fire" speak to the loneliness and isolation that can come with fame, as well as the toll that success can take on a person's mental health. The narrator is trapped in a cycle of feeling invisible and then trying to draw attention to herself in desperate ways, but she can't seem to break free from it.

Before I used to just like the song but as time goes on it becomes more and more personal.
In Highschool I wasn’t popular but I was quite outgoing and always had the time of day for people who wanted to talk (we talked and laughed and fell in love in “my” backyard)
Slowly over time I found I began to fade away. Not any more or less present but I’ve found despite being more and more aware that I have nothing to prove to anyone I’ve come to avoid having anyone to dare to prove anything to (I hide and cower in the corner, conversations getting hard)
Maybe it’s all the times I’ve been talked over, all the times people have left without a goodbye in every way one could leave. Maybe it’s my thoughts being brushed to the side. Maybe it’s the amount of times I’ve needed and asked for help and it never came. My voice one way or another was drowned out time and time again. (Nobody seems to ask about me anymore. And no one ever cares about anything I think. Nobody seems to recognize me in the crowd, in the background screaming everybody look at me)
I’m fading away, I’m fading away you know I used to be on fire. I’m standing in the ashes of who I used to be. You know I used to be on fire? Well I used to be on fire
And yet I’m still an extrovert. I still like people so I sit in Uni classes in the middle (like a darling starlight centre peace)
letting my presence be silently known but yet I can’t come to take interest in talking to people. The things they’d want to talk with me about I have trouble sharing (now it’s my own anxiety that makes the conversation hard)
I’m fading away, I’m fading away you know I used to be on fire. I’m standing in the ashes of who I used to be. You know I used to be on fire? Well I used to be on fire
