The singer muses about Luna (Halsey’s character in hopeless fountain kingdom). Halsey hinted that the song is from the perspective of the House of Aureum and their fear over her relationship with Solis Angelus, or ‘White Nite’.
The song is partially spoken which was confirmed by Halsey confirmed via Twitter to be her 12-year-old brother Dante, with the ending being sung with resonating chorus.
Good Mourning

A city with the streets full of milk and honey
I haven't found it yet, but I'm still searching
All I know is a hopeless place that flows with the blood of my kin
Perhaps hopeless isn't a place
Nothing but a state of mind
They told me once, "Don't trust the moon, she's always changing"
The shores bend and break for her
And she begs to be loved
But nothing here is as it seems
Sun is coming up oh, why, oh, why, oh, why
Sun is coming up oh, why, oh, why, oh, why
Sun is coming up oh, why, oh, why, oh, why
Sun is coming up oh, why, oh, why, oh, why
Sun is coming up oh, why, oh, why, oh, why
Sun is coming up oh, why, oh, why, oh, why
Sun is coming up oh, why, oh, why, oh, why
Halsey’s “Good Mourning” is a track off of her 2015 debut album, Badlands. The song opens up with the lines, “They told me once, 'there's a place where love conquers all,' a city with streets full of milk and honey. I haven't found it yet, but I'm still searching. All I know is a hopeless place that flows with the blood of my kin.” The opening lines set the tone and the mood for the rest of the song. Here, Halsey is referencing the concept of a promised land, a place where everything will be perfect and where love will ultimately conquer all. However, she has yet to find this place, and instead, she is stuck in a hopeless, desolate place where there is only bloodshed.
Halsey then tries to make sense of her current circumstances, wondering if “hopeless” is a specific place or simply a state of mind. She further adds, “They told me once, ‘don’t trust the moon, she’s always changing.’ The shores bend and break for her, and she begs to be loved, but nothing here is as it seems.” These lines seem to suggest that though the world around us may appear beautiful and perfect, there’s always something darker underneath. Like the moon, things are always changing, and the reality is far from what they appear to be. The repeated chorus of “sun is coming up oh why” seems to hint at a feeling of despair, as if she can’t escape the darkness of the situation she’s in.
