A foreign winter a curse I can't escape
I feel the winter burying my bones
A core reminder that I'm so far from home
I know we're worlds apart
Seasons stitched together somehow
What's it like where you are?
It hurts to know we're always
Worlds apart (can you feel it, can you feel it)
This burning I feel is slowing down my heart
(Can you feel it, can you feel it)
It hurts to know we're worlds apart
It hurts to know, what it's like where you are
A fire in my skin an ache in every burn
My soul is sinking the cold is creeping in
I feel the winter burying my bones
A core reminder that I'm so far from home
I know we're worlds apart
Seasons stitched together somehow
What's it like where you are?
I can't recall I'm too far
It hurts to know we're always
Worlds apart (can you feel it, can you feel it)
This burning I feel is slowing down my heart
(Can you feel it, can you feel it)
It hurts to know we're worlds apart
It hurts to know, what it's like where you are
I can see my breath floating away
The warmth in me escapes
I can't recall I'm too far
It hurts to know we're always
Worlds apart (can you feel it, can you feel it)
This burning I feel is slowing down my heart
(Can you feel it, can you feel it)
It hurts to know we're worlds apart
It hurts to know, what it's like where you are
The song "Degrees of Separation" by Hands Like Houses describes feelings of isolation and distance, with the theme of winter as a metaphor for separation. The lyrics express a sense of displacement, as the singer is distant and disconnected from the person they're singing to, and the winter imagery adds to the feeling of coldness and separation. The phrase "worlds apart" is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing how far apart the two people are from each other.
The chorus, with its repeated question "what's it like where you are?" shows the singer's desperate desire to bridge the distance between them, and to understand what it's like to be in the other person's shoes. The final lines of the song with "I can see my breath floating away, the warmth in me escapes" further reinforce the idea of being alone, disconnected and struggling to stay warm in the coldness.
Overall, the song is a powerful and emotive representation of the feeling of isolation and distance, using imagery of winter to capture the theme of separation.
