The Very Thought of You
Harry Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The little ordinary things everyone ought to do
I'm living in a kind of daydream
I'm happy as a queen
And foolish though it may seem
To me it's everything
The mere idea of you, the longing here for you
till I'm near to you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love
The lyrics of Harry James & Doris Day's song The Very Thought of You are an ode to the overwhelming power of love. The track narrates how the lover’s mind is transported to a wonderful dreamland at the mere thought of their significant other. The opening lines, “The very thought of you, and I forget to do the little ordinary things everyone ought to do” portrays the level of distraction and preoccupation the lover experiences when thoughts of their loved one pass through their mind. The singer then goes on to confess their daydreaming state of mind, their immeasurable joy, and how it all revolves around the person they love.
The second verse reveals the deep yearning, and intense desire the singer holds for their loved one. “You'll never know how slow the moments go till I'm near to you” is a testament to the impatient excitement the singer feels when they are about to see or hold their lover. The imagery presented in “I see your face in every flower, Your eyes in stars above” reinforces the overwhelming presence the lover has in the singer’s life. The chorus of the song, “It's just the thought of you, The very thought of you, my love” emphasizes the power of love and how it has captured the singer’s heart and mind.
