You Go To My Head
Harry Allen Lyrics

And you linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne
You go to my head
Like a sip of sparkling burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
The thrill of the thought
That you might give a thought to my plea, cast a spell over me
Still I say to myself get a hold of yourself
Can't you see that it never can be?
You go to my head
With a smile that makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand July's
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes
Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance
You go to my head
You go to my head
The song "You Go To My Head" by Harry Allen is a love ballad that describes the intoxicating effect the subject of the song has on the singer. The lyrics vividly capture the feeling of being completely consumed by someone's presence, like they are haunting the singer's thoughts. The metaphor of bubbles in a glass of champagne adds to the luxurious and effervescent feeling the subject of the song elicits, and the comparison to a "sip of sparkling burgundy brew" heightens this sense of indulgence. The kicker in a julep is a metaphor that conveys the idea that the mere mention of the subject of the song is enough to give the singer a rush of excitement.
Despite being aware that the relationship is unlikely to work out, the singer is helpless in the face of their feelings, which are embodied and fuelled by the subject's smile and gaze. The contradiction between the emotional intensity of the singer's feelings and the rational knowledge that the relationship is unlikely to succeed is palpable, and adds a touch of pathos to the song. Overall, "You Go To My Head" is a masterful evocation of the heady, consuming, and contradictory experience of being in love.
