Despite his personal struggles, he rose up during the 70's, the heyday of Salsa. He performed in sold out nightclubs, stadiums, and in some of the most prestigious concert halls. His recordings garnered him many awards and gold albums. His musical success is attributed to his extraordinary lyrical improvisations. His unique salsa flavor has remained without rival. Sadly, due to his losing battle with addiction to heroin, it played havoc with his career. There was a suicide attempt and ultimately he died from AIDS.
"El Cantante" (The Singer), a biopic based on Hector Lavoe's life, was releaded in 2006. Jennifer Lopez, who produced the film, also plays the role of one of his wives Puchi, while Marc Anthony portrays the ill-fated lead role.
Un Amor De La Calle
Hector Lavoe Lyrics

Creí que eras sincera
Y te entregué mi vida
Sin ninguna condición;
The lyrics of Héctor Lavoe's song Un Amor De La Calle express the singer's disappointment and heartbreak after being deceived by a woman he thought was different and sincere. He had given her his life unconditionally, believing in a relationship built on love and commitment, but it all turned out to be just a dream of his enamored soul. The woman played with his affection and treated him just like any other man she could find on the streets, breaking his heart and leaving him in pain. Despite the hurt, he acknowledges that love like hers is easily found on the streets and he asks his heart to stop crying.
The lyrics paint a picture of a man who trusted the wrong person and got hurt badly. He may have believed that he had found true love, but it was just a mirage, and he was just another victim of the game that some people play with the feelings of others. The words "igual que una de tantas" (just like any of the many) and "tú eres una de tantas" (you are just one of the many) suggest that this isn't the first time he has been in this situation, and it probably won't be the last. He knows that love like hers is not hard to find, and he has learned an important lesson about the dangers of giving his heart away too easily and the importance of choosing a partner carefully.
