Despite his personal struggles, he rose up during the 70's, the heyday of Salsa. He performed in sold out nightclubs, stadiums, and in some of the most prestigious concert halls. His recordings garnered him many awards and gold albums. His musical success is attributed to his extraordinary lyrical improvisations. His unique salsa flavor has remained without rival. Sadly, due to his losing battle with addiction to heroin, it played havoc with his career. There was a suicide attempt and ultimately he died from AIDS.
"El Cantante" (The Singer), a biopic based on Hector Lavoe's life, was releaded in 2006. Jennifer Lopez, who produced the film, also plays the role of one of his wives Puchi, while Marc Anthony portrays the ill-fated lead role.

saca y abre tu cuchillo y ten cuidao
Pónganme oido en este barrio
muchos guapos lo han matao
Calle Luna, Calle Sol
Eh
Oye camina no mires pal lao
Y ten cuidao y ten cuidao
Cuidao saca tu coco pelao
The lyrics of "Calle Luna, Calle Sol" by Hector Lavoe and Willie Colon describe the realities of living in a tough neighborhood, where violence and danger are part of everyday life. The opening lines urge the listener to be careful and ready to defend themselves, as the danger is ever-present. The song then speaks to the broader issues of poverty and crime that plague the neighborhood, warning that anyone can fall victim to it. The lines "En los barrios de guapos no se vive tranquilo" (In tough neighborhoods, you don't live peacefully) and "mide bien tus palabras o no vales ni un kilo" (Choose your words carefully, or you won't be worth a dime) illustrate the harsh reality of living in these areas.
The refrain "Calle Luna, Calle Sol" refers to the streets that intersect and are symbolic of the intersection of the dangers in the neighborhoods where crime thrives. The song's message is clear: life in this neighborhood is tough, and residents must be aware of the dangers that can arise unexpectedly. The lyrics also urge residents to be their own protectors, to watch their backs, to keep moving forward, and to keep their eyes straight ahead.
Overall, "Calle Luna, Calle Sol" is a powerful commentary on life in poor, dangerous neighborhoods, where survival depends on always being vigilant and aware of one's surroundings.
