Taking a Chance On Love
Helen Forrest Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here I go again, I hear those trumpets blow again.
All aglow again, takin' a chance on love.
Here I slide again, about to take that ride again.
Starry-eyed again, takin' a chance on love.

I thought that cards were a frame-up, I never would try.
Now I'm taking that game up and the ace of hearts is high.
Things are mending now, I see a rainbow blending now.
We'll have a happy ending now, takin' a chance on love.

Here I slip again, about to take that trip again.
I got that grip again, takin' a chance on love.
Now I prove again that I can make life move again.
Um - I'm in the groove again, takin' a chance on love.

I walk around with a horse shoe, in clover I lie.
And brother rabbit of course you better kiss your, foot good-bye.

On that ball again I'm ridin' for a fall again.
I'm gonna give my all again takin' a chance on love.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Taking a Chance on Love" by Helen Forrest describe the feeling of being in love and the fear and excitement involved in taking a risk for love. The song starts with the sound of trumpets, which is a symbol of excitement and anticipation. The singer is all aglow and starry-eyed, which implies that she is in love, and ready to take a chance with her heart again. The idea of taking a chance on love is reinforced several times throughout the song with phrases such as "here I go again" and "takin' a chance on love."

The theme of gambling is also present in the lyrics, as the singer compares taking a chance on love to playing a card game. She thought that cards were a frame-up and that she would never try her luck, but she is now taking that game up, with the ace of hearts high. The singer also talks about how things are mending now, and how she sees a rainbow blending, which could be interpreted as a symbol of hope for a happy ending. The repeated use of "again" and "now" suggests that the singer has been through this before and is willing to take the risk again for the possibility of love.

The lyrics also contain several references to good luck and superstition, as the singer talks about walking around with a horseshoe and being in clover, which is associated with good fortune. The line "brother rabbit of course you better kiss your foot good-bye" is a reference to a popular African American folk tale, where Brother Rabbit uses his wit to escape danger. The line implies that the singer is so lucky that even Brother Rabbit would have to kiss his foot goodbye.

Overall, the lyrics of "Taking a Chance on Love" convey the emotions of love, hope, fear, and excitement, and encourage listeners to take a risk for love.

Even though I am to young to remember the big band era, everytime I listen to this kind of music I think,  WHY CANT WE HAVE MUSIC LIKE THIS ANYMORE ?????

+Star buono. Actually, we do have this music now and forever. So long as these recordings exist, this great stuff will always be with us. Thank Thomas Edison for inventing the phonograph.

That is not true. Classical music was much more popular back then than it is now.

Iran Machado

Music is always a function of time. During the 40's the was no room for Mozart, Vivaldi, Schubert, Beethoven or else. Time has no rewind, unfortunately.

I love this sound very much! Thank you for posting.

Still sounds great, Edmund. The songwriter, Vernon Duke (April in Paris, Autumn in New York, I Can't Get Started), also wrote classical compositions under his original name, Vladimir Dukeltsky or something like that.

I still have all my Helen Forrest & Dorsey Bros records. They’re timeless.

INDEPENDENT FILM CHANNEL

Always liked this song. Helen Forrest's voice has that effortless quality which makes everybody think "I can do that." Of course they can't. Benny Goodman made magic with that clarinet.
