Herbie Mann was born in Brooklyn, New York. Early in his career, he played saxophone and clarinet, but Mann was among the first jazz musicians to specialize on the flute and was perhaps jazz music's preminent flautist during the 1960s.

Mann was quite prolific and performed often. His first gig was playing in the Catskills at age 15. His last, on May 3, 2003 was at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival at age 73. Herbie Mann died at age 73 on July 1, 2003 of prostate cancer.

Keep playing the flute, it makes you unique and special because you don't really see it a lot in Jazz. And please keep loving Jazz. She is a young Jazz flute player who is really good.

Herbie Mann flute, Ben Tucker bass (he wrote this great tune), Ray Mantilla conga, Chief Bey African drum, Hagood Hardy vibraharp, and Rudy Collins drums. Recorded live at the Village Gate in New York November 17, 1961. My mother had this record and I used to hear it when I was 6 years old. I love Ben Tucker's solo at 6:00.

I'm 52 now and remembered this is one of the cuts my dad would play. It would have me be-bopping around the house as a lil kid. Jazz was always playing in my house growing up.This is such a cool ass cut! Definitely sounds like something Quentin Tarantino would use in a movie.

I had the experience of working with Herbie Mann on the Fire Island Album on Atlantic. He was an amazing musician and innovator. This tune is a Mann classic to say the least.

One of the few jazz tunes that rock bands played in the Sixties. Probably the first jazz tune I learned to play (I’m a guitar player). We did it slower and funkier.

Long, long ago, I was coming home from a friends apartment, taking a short cut by crossing through the campus at Carnegie Mellon where the school radio station played this song over the outdoor pa system on a beautiful warm day.

Shortly after that, I bought a flute and taught myself to play this song. It's still a favorite.

I love this song. My usual likes of music usually include Roiling Stones, AC/DC, and the 50's oldies. Haven't heard this song since 1963. Just though of it today and looked it up on youtube. It will be one of the songs that I will listen to over and over without ever getting tired of it,. Just sent it to my twin sister and I know it will blow her away.

Herbie Mann made his rendition of 'Coming Home' a song of the ages. I must've bought 20 copies through the ages. Albums, cassettes and CDs. I still enjoy listening to this guy. I seen Herbie at 'Shelly's Man Hole in Hollywood in 1971. What a great show. I'll always remember the gal I was with there, too. She was really amazed at his smooth, mysterious and emotional musicianship. Made my night. Thank you, Herbie Mann, Atlantic Records and catman916.

For us surfers in the early 60's 'livin the beach in So.Cal ' Herbison Mann brought a level of sophistication to the concept of music at that time like no other. He owned it and that genius work owned us to this day. The album is a must keeper.

This was the first jazz album I bought; always thought Herbie Mann wrote it. I was mistaken, the song was written by Ben Tucker, the bassist. Herbie was smart, he hired the best sideman to back him up. Love Ben Tucker's solo on "Coming Home Baby" and the rhythm section is tight.

Oh man does this bring back memories, I was 15 when this came out and I used to have the record haven’t heard it for so long and then all of a sudden it popped into my head. I think I did play it on my radio show though in the 70s. Too bad all my records burned up in a fire. Thank you so much for sharing!

This came to me in the late afternoon one summer day near a town named Millstone in Jersey. I was shooting bass bugs on the river across from a farmhouse from which the tune low and beautiful came from the second floor window. It was very warm that afternoon and I was sweating a little wondering who it was up there, I pictured a lovely woman in a trance just as I was. Too this day I’m still drawn into it.

I first heard this when I was about 13 or 14 and I fell madly in love with it and "Summertime" right after it. Herbie had the greatest groove of all and he played so sweet and bluesy and never ran out of ideas. For me, the best! And flute, my favorite

This IS a masterpiece. It's like a concerto for Chinese flute but filtered through Kitaro's Ten-Kai-era music-making when he was insular and just exploring, not taking it on the road, yet. But, this was a "LIVE" recording! He never ceases to amaze me!

Double stops are when the bass player in this case Ben Tucker (the guy who wrote this song) plays two strings at the same time in the fifth octave. That means your left hand is pressing more than one string at time and your right hand is plucking two strings at a time. It adds texture to the music and a contrapuntal quality to the music. Violins and cellos also use this technique. It is consider a sign of virtuosity and being one hep cat which Ben Tucker certainly was.

I remember this from my childhood. My dad used to play this endlessly....with Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Smith, etc....back in the 60's. There, that is when and how I got my appreciation and love for jazz. I'm a child of the 60's. The Beatles & Motown is what I grew up on. My love for rock & soul remains to this day. One of the first jazz LPs I bought,"The Magic Flute of Herbie Mann." It was mainstream except for the last cut,"The Evolution of Mann." Pretty outside for 1958-59.

Early on in my career, I opened for Herbie Mann at a Hartwood Acres outdoor concert in Pennsylvania and heard him play part of this tune until it started to rain and the audience scattered for cover. Herbie continued to play as the crowd ran to their cars! Then in the early 90's I went to Hilton Head, S.C. and eventually met Ben Tucker, who wrote this tune with Bob Dorough. Ben Hired me to sing at his club Hard Hearted Hannah's in City Market in Savannah, GA. I love singing this tune and send it up to Ben every time!

I first heard the brilliant vibist Dave Pike back in the early 60s when he was accompanying Herbie Mann at the Blackhawk in San Francisco. Been a big fan of Dave ever since. Herbie is the embodiment of cool. When not soloing Mann would pick up a tambourine and holding down at the length of his arm he would subtlety rock it back and forth. No choreography could have been cooler than that. On this track, Herbie didn't let Dave solo until deep into the song and then just one short chorus. Dave unloaded like a popped cork.

Actually everyone plays this tune wrong. Not only did Ben show me on his upright but he showed me the original chart he wrote. It's G-7 to F sus. Not G-7 to C-7. But it's jazz right so play how you want. I miss Ben. It was an honor to play with him and just to be around a man larger than life like him. Boy, all the greats will some be gone.
