Herbie Mann was born in Brooklyn, New York. Early in his career, he played saxophone and clarinet, but Mann was among the first jazz musicians to specialize on the flute and was perhaps jazz music's preminent flautist during the 1960s.
Mann was quite prolific and performed often. His first gig was playing in the Catskills at age 15. His last, on May 3, 2003 was at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival at age 73. Herbie Mann died at age 73 on July 1, 2003 of prostate cancer.

I having been playing flute since 6th grade I am now in 10th grade and this is my first year being in a jazz class. Everyone thought it was weird to have a flute player in jazz but I didn’t give up and now it’s my favorite class and I love jazz more than ever!

Naah man... it's totally cool to have a flute in a Jazz band... there are no rules in jazz music... keep doing YOU...

WOW !!! I am so proud of you and Herbie Mann and I live in Connecticut not far me and helped us raise money for kids going to college. Read his bio if you choose to and there are women also playing the flute that are now world famous . Do not give up on your dreams and goals. Sincerely Miss Rosemary 77 years young.

Keep playing the flute, it makes you unique and special because you don't really see it a lot in Jazz. And please keep loving Jazz. It gives hope to older jazz lovers like me that the music won't die. If you are looking for some inspiration, look up an artist named Elena Pinderhughes. She is a young Jazz flute player who is really good.

Although I'm a classically trained flutist by training, I absolutely love this. It's such a nice change of pace to hear flutists making excellent music outside of the typical norm.
@herb369nichols
When it comes to music and musical instruments, there is no "typical norm". Look up Ian Anderson.
😂😂😂😂 Just noticed how old your comment is 😂😂
I hope your horizons have substantially broadened by now. 🥳

I started to listen to Herbie Mann in 1966, I have 40 of his albums, which have more warmth than the CD,s He was an outstanding flautist.
