Time Is Dancing
Howard Ben Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm sorry that I just walked away
Lost in the insignificance of mine
I had no words to say
Now I am better, I implore you to say it isn't right
But somewhere deep in history
Your father pulled your teeth out of your face
I do believe we're only passing through
Wired again, now look who's laughing
You again, oh you, oh you, oh you
Hold it in, now let's go dancing
I do believe we're only passing through
Wired again, now look who's laughing
Me again, all fired up on you
And mow she's caught between
What to say and what she really means
Wrapped up in empathy
The chemicals are pushing past my blood
Hold all my cliches there you're tipping my tongue
To tell you that it's love
Oh hold it in, now let's go dancing
I do believe we're only passing through
Wired again, now look who's laughing
You again, oh you, oh you, oh you
Hold it in, now let's go dancing
I do believe we're only passing through
Wired again, now look who's laughing
Me again, all fired up on you
And now she's caught between
What to say and what she really means
And I am finally coloring
Inside the lines that I live between
Hold it in there, let's go dancing
I do believe we're only passing through
Wired again, now look who's laughing
You again, oh you, oh you, oh you
Hold it in, now let's go dancing
I do believe we're only passing through
Wired again, now look who's laughing
Me again, all fired up on you
The lyrics of Howard Ben's song "Time Is Dancing" delve into the complexities of relationships, communication, and self-discovery. The opening lines, "Wrapped up in dissonance, I'm sorry that I just walked away," suggest a sense of internal conflict and regret. The singer reflects on feeling lost and unable to convey their emotions adequately, leading to a missed opportunity for connection. The mention of insignificance highlights a feeling of powerlessness or inadequacy in expressing oneself.
The reference to a past event where "Your father pulled your teeth out of your face" creates a vivid imagery of a traumatic experience, symbolizing a painful memory or a difficult relationship that has left a lasting impact. This lyric could represent a deep-rooted source of emotional turmoil that continues to affect the individual in the present.
The recurring motif of "Let's go dancing" conveys a desire for movement, release, and a metaphorical journey through life. The lines "I do believe we're only passing through" suggest a transient nature of existence, urging the listener to make the most of their time and experiences. The mention of being "Wired again, now look who's laughing" hints at a sense of playfulness or unpredictability in life's twists and turns.
The final verse, with lines like "And now she's caught between, What to say and what she really means," touches upon the theme of communication and sincerity in relationships. The singer acknowledges the struggle of navigating between honesty and diplomacy, hinting at the complexities of human interactions. The introspective line "And I am finally coloring, Inside the lines that I live between" suggests a newfound understanding or acceptance of the boundaries and constraints that shape one's existence.
Overall, "Time Is Dancing" encapsulates themes of self-reflection, emotional vulnerability, and the ebb and flow of human connections. The lyrics invite listeners to ponder the significance of fleeting moments, the importance of honest communication, and the continual process of self-discovery amidst life's uncertainties.

6 years have passed since he released the album and I still come back to this song every now and then. It holds such a special meaning which I can’t explain. I was 18 when I first listened to this song and it’s like an old friend I’ve been carrying with me for years into adulthood. It makes me feel melancholic yet nostalgic.
I call this my life song and I’m glad other people are feeling the same way.

Keep feeling those feelings, you are a talent.

I feel the same. How an artist like Ben can singlehandedly create something that tells the story of my life more accurately than I could is astonishingly beautiful and mysterious.

Hey man, same here, first had pleasure to listen to it on the cold winter. At night when during a light flurry it really opens up from the whole new different perspective. For me it`s more of a statement of transience of life. How we should at times just put aside our troubles and realize that one day it will be over. I close my eyes and picture a fleeting images flying sequentially one after another as the beat of the song virtually transfixes you. So glad internet provides a possibility to experience such profound modern poets.

This is by far my favourite song. No other song has made me feel what this song has. When I listen to it I experience new depths of emotions. It's like I'm teleporting through time/space just to end up back where I always have been. At the same time there is this sense of dread, like I'm alone and I know how this all ends but I still keep going, I even try to enjoy the journey. But I'm watching all of this happen from the outside. It's like I had forgotten that I have always known this song, and now I'm remembering.

Beautifully said! “We’re only passing through.”

Rob, I'm so brokenhearted that I don't have the courage to even listen to this song. It used to be our song.Thank you for sharing 5 years of your life with me. There's nothing harder than getting over you even though I am the one who left. It stabs my heart whenever I get a flashback of moments shared with you... I pray every day that we both heal from this and that you get the most out of life because you deserve it. <3
