Long time friends Glen Hughes and Joe Lynn Turner had first planned to release an album together in 1989, the two got together and wrote some demos, but nothing ended up being released from these sessions. In 2000 Hughes toured Japan with Turner, followed by joint appearances during the Voices of Classic Rock tour in 2001. During this time the two decided to start work on a new collaboration.
The duo released their first album in February 2002, it was simply called HTP. The album featured Hughes’ regular guitarist JJ Marsh, who contributed to much of the song-writing. There were also contributions drummer Shane Galaas and keyboardist Vince DiCola as well as guest guitarists John Sykes, Paul Gilbert and Akira Kajiyama. The follow-up album, simply titled HTP 2 was released in September 2003 and was stylistically in a similar vein to the first record.
After the conclusion of the 2004 tour the pair decided to put the Hughes Turner Project on an indefinite hiatus so they could focus more on their solo careers
Sofia
Hughes Turner Project Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There is no master plan
There is no hologram for you
And now I understand
Outside your seven walls
There is no peace at all
Sofia - I couldn't stay
Sofia - I go my way
Now all is said and done
You were the only one for me
Inside the picture frame
There is no one to blame you see
So much we had to give, now I don't wanna live
Sofia - I couldn't stay
Sofia - I go my way
Sofia - the rain will fall
Sofia - after it all
The lyrics of Hughes Turner Project's song Sofia speak of a doomed love affair that has ended abruptly. The singer speaks directly to Sofia, addressing her as the one person he loved but ultimately couldn't be with. The lyrics "there is no master plan, there is no hologram for you" seem to suggest that there was no predetermined future for them as a couple, and that their relationship was bound to end sooner or later. The singer understands this and recognizes that there was nothing else he could do but end it.
The line "outside your seven walls, there is no peace at all" might refer to Sofia's emotional barriers and how they prevented the singer from finding peace in the relationship. The title of the song, Sofia, could be a reference to the city of Sofia in Bulgaria, which has a reputation for being a romantic and picturesque destination. The singer may have imagined Sofia as the perfect setting for their relationship, but ultimately found out that it wasn't meant to be.
Overall, the lyrics of Sofia are reflective and bittersweet, with the singer acknowledging the importance of the relationship while recognizing that it couldn't last. The lyrics are enhanced by the soaring vocals of Glenn Hughes and the guitar work of Joe Lynn Turner, making it a powerful ballad that is both emotionally raw and musically stunning.
