Long time friends Glen Hughes and Joe Lynn Turner had first planned to release an album together in 1989, the two got together and wrote some demos, but nothing ended up being released from these sessions. In 2000 Hughes toured Japan with Turner, followed by joint appearances during the Voices of Classic Rock tour in 2001. During this time the two decided to start work on a new collaboration.
The duo released their first album in February 2002, it was simply called HTP. The album featured Hughes’ regular guitarist JJ Marsh, who contributed to much of the song-writing. There were also contributions drummer Shane Galaas and keyboardist Vince DiCola as well as guest guitarists John Sykes, Paul Gilbert and Akira Kajiyama. The follow-up album, simply titled HTP 2 was released in September 2003 and was stylistically in a similar vein to the first record.
After the conclusion of the 2004 tour the pair decided to put the Hughes Turner Project on an indefinite hiatus so they could focus more on their solo careers

(Hughes/Turner/Marsh)
Something's lost, and something's gained
In every word
Listening, to hear the words I've never heard
Life goes on, time is not a friend to me
Almost gone, reaching for my destiny
My spirit is off the ground
I know where my soul can be found
I've been waiting so long
I've been waiting so long to be free
Now I'm floating so high I can see
I'm learning to fly, I'm burning the sky
I'm learning to fly, I'm burning the sky
I'm learning to fly, I'm burning the sky
Live and learn
Who knows what it's all about
Every turn
Leaving me with only doubt
My spirit is off the ground
I know where my soul can be found
CHORUS
The above lyrics are from the song Burning The Sky by the Hughes Turner Project. The song talks about the struggles and the search for freedom that we all face in life. The opening lines of the song "Something's lost, and something's gained in every word, Listening, to hear the words I've never heard" talks about how we all have to give up something in order to gain something else in life. This could be in the form of sacrificing relationships, careers or even expectations and dreams in order to gain something better in life.
The second verse of the song "Life goes on, time is not a friend to me, Almost gone, reaching for my destiny" talks about how life is short and time is not on our side. We all have a limited amount of time on this earth and we must use this time wisely to achieve our destiny. The chorus of the song talks about how the singer has finally found freedom and is learning to fly and burn the sky. The repeated lines "I'm learning to fly, I'm burning the sky" highlight the exhilaration and excitement of finally achieving your dreams and becoming free from your struggles.
Overall, the lyrics of the song 'Burning The Sky' is a motivational piece that encourages listeners to keep pushing through their struggles and to keep chasing their dreams until they finally achieve freedom and happiness.
