Back in the day when an instrumental could hit the top of the charts. This was incredible. A movie that was a giant at the theaters includes an equally memorable theme song (written by Ennio Morricone). Leave it to the Italians to understand what mood is in film music. The best theme to reach the top of the charts and be as memorable as The Magnificent Seven theme.

@Sondra Smith - Then those disc jockeys weren't taught properly Sondra -- because I did that for a time in Boston.

The DJ should backtrack the time on the recorded music (radio stations always have the intro time & full time on charts) & bring up the music already in progress. Listeners won't notice much.

If the DJ knows how to read a clock the instrumental should fade out at the end exactly on the hour as The News begins. But only professionals would know how to do that. And in radio, professionals are getting thinned out. Lots of dead air -- (nothing being broadcast) which used to be a serious infraction.

This one is the one that actually got radio play, but moreover if you watch it from beginning to end the opening title sequence this is the music not the version by ennio morricone which was of course used throughout the movie.

I must admit, when I first heard this, about age 6, I was horrified of this music, lol.. it sounded so dark, scary, and mysterious. Now, as a musician, I love the musical scoring and orchestration , and know this dark, minor mode was the perfect choice to portray the musical image desired. I did not see the movie until I was an adult in my late 20's.

This is the best performence of this song. As teenager it took me years to find this album. The original film music was easily found, but not this one by Hugo Montenegro.

An amazing run in the top 40 spending 14 weeks (most top 10s spent maybe 10-11 weeks then) & peaking at #2 for one week.

The barooque sounds created by Ennio in mid 1960s are magical. This one aided with the kinds of AFOD and FAFDM are the genre we remember to this day with gusto. Such a pathbreaking music can surely be created by a pathbreaking, musician, that's Ennio Morricone for all. Immortal!
