The band is best known thanks to the single Stars from the album You'd Prefer An Astronaut, appearing in the tops of several magazines and on various radio stations at the time.
The band was mostly inactive (except for sporadic performances) until reuniting in 2015 for a series of short tours. On June 23, 2020, the band announced and released Inlet by surprise via the internet, their first album of new material in over twenty-two years. On July 1, 2021, it was announced via Instagram that the band's longtime drummer Bryan St. Pere had passed away at the age of 52, prompting the band to cease activities once again.

Suicide Machine
Hum Lyrics

Sleep comes to everyone, everyone maybe yeah, but you
Sleep comes to everyone while we wait, wide awake and blue
Sleep comes to everyone, everyone maybe, yeah, but me and you
And so I give myself away, to everybody everyday
And so I give myself to you, and you need it more than I do
And so I give myself away, unto everybody everyday
Sleep comes to everyone while we wait for the Sunday afternoons
And sleep comes to everyone, everyone maybe, yeah, but you
And I had this one figured out, that's why the suicide machine is built for two
A simple sick device devised to overload on love
To bring us colored dreams and sound tracked waves of fun
And so I give myself away, to everybody everyday
And so I give myself to you, and you need it more than I do
And so I give myself away, to everybody everyday
And so I give myself to you, and you need it more than I do
Sleep comes to no one else like we have falling through the ground,
Fulfilling promises of endless summer nights, I'm losing ground, you're losing sound
Somewhere through a thousand blues a dragonfly descends with just a whisper,
"I'm lonelier than God"
And all my wishes spin the fishes in the air and every one
A different shade of you
And to the left where up is down now stands a zebra
Made of shapes of me, and silver and the sun
So bring no guilt with you up above the flat line
Let's just hit the sky exploding into one
In the lyrics to "Suicide Machine," Hum expresses the feelings of loneliness and exhaustion that often accompany human existence. The song is structured around the repeated phrase "Sleep comes to everyone," undercutting the universality of the statement with the qualifier "maybe," suggesting that the singer and their intended audience are exempt from the restful oblivion that sleep can provide. The song seems to be about the singer's willingness to offer themselves up to others, even as they feel emotionally depleted themselves. This desperation to connect leads the singer to imagine a bizarre "suicide machine built for two" that will overload on love and provide a kind of colorfully frenzied escape from the mundane world.
