Sleep
My Chemical Romance Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They're these terrors, and its like
It feels like as if somebody was gripping my
They're theses terrors and its like
It feels like as if somebody was gripping my throat

Like last night, uh, they're not like tremors
They're worse than tremors they're, they're theses terrors
Like last night, uh, they're not like tremors
They're worse than tremors they're, they're theses terrors

And its like
It feels like as if somebody was gripping my throat
And squeezing and
It feels like as if somebody was gripping my throat

Some say, now suffer all the children
And walk away a savior
Or a madman and polluted
From gutter institutions
Don't you breathe for me
Undeserving of your sympathy
'Cause there ain't no way that I'm sorry for what I did

And through it all
How could you cry for me?
'Cause I don't feel bad about it
So shut your eyes
Kiss me goodbye
And sleep
Just sleep

The hardest part is letting go of your dreams

A drink for the horror that I'm in
For the good guys, and the bad guys
For the monsters in our beds
Three cheers for tyranny
Unapologetic apathy
'Cause there ain't no way that I'm coming back again

And through it all
How could you cry for me?
'Cause I don't feel bad about it
So shut your eyes
Kiss me goodbye
And sleep
Just sleep

The hardest part's the awful things that I've seen

Sometimes I see flames and sometimes
I see people that I love dying and, it's always

Just sleep
Just sleep
Just sleep
Just sleep
Just sleep
Just sleep

Wake up
Wake up
Wake up
Wake up
And I can't, I can't ever wake up

Overall Meaning

The song "Sleep" by My Chemical Romance describes a deep sense of despair and darkness that is causing the singer to feel like they are suffocating in their terrors. The lyrics describe the physical sensation of something gripping the singer's throat, which creates a sense of fear and helplessness that is difficult to escape. The song seems to be a commentary on the struggles of mental illness and the inability to control one's own thoughts and feeling, as well as the effect that this can have on those around you.

The song opens with a description of the singer's terrors, which are described as worse than tremors. The lyrics suggest that these terrors are not physical, but emotional, and seem to be a manifestation of the singer's mental state. The chorus repeats the phrase "sleep" over and over again, creating a sense of hopelessness and resignation that is overwhelming.

The second half of the song takes a different tone, as the singer appears to be reflecting on their actions and the impact that they have had on others. The lyrics suggest that the singer has done things that are difficult to forgive, and that they feel undeserving of sympathy. The song concludes with a repetition of the phrase "wake up," suggesting that the singer is trapped in their own darkness and unable to escape.

Overall, "Sleep" is a powerful and emotional song that captures the struggles of mental illness and the sense of hopelessness that can come with it. The lyrics are dark and haunting, and the repetition of the chorus creates a hypnotizing effect that draws the listener into the singer's world. The song is a testament to the power of music to convey complex emotions and to provide a sense of catharsis for those who are struggling.

I wasn't even part of the 'emo' movement, or anything even close. I simply thought this band had some of the greatest instrumentation & theatrics I've ever heard. It blows my mind to this day that people could call any of MCR's music "shitty" or "uninspired".

@tijmenvaningenschenau3444

mofomanx10 same, never felt depressed or anything in my life, but the music is just so goddamn good in my opinion.

@kattakid9884

When asked about being labeled emo, Way responded:

"Basically, it's never been accurate to describe us. Emo bands were being booked while we were touring with Christian metal bands because no one would book us on tours. I think emo is fucking garbage, it's bullshit. I think there's bands that unfortunately we get lumped in with that are considered emo and by default that starts to make us emo. All I can say is anyone actually listening to the records, put the records next to each other and listen to them and there's actually no similarities." But tell us how you really feel, Gerard? "I think emo's a pile of shit."

MCR is not emo

@esmyyt3061

Mcr is not really emo. But yah I can’t believe people call them shitty.

@fizzahhussain4951

mofomanx10 wait people call then shitty. They must be jealous!

@D0omC0okie

I started listening to mcr waaay before I knew anything about depression/sadness wasn't ever an emo but their music simply resonates with me
