Since HYDE keeps his personal information scarce, much about him is either unknown or unofficial, including his real name, purported to be Hideto Takarai. He confirmed his birthdate (January 29, 1969) in an interview for the 2002 March issue of Rockin On Japan.
HYDE's debut as a solo artist was in October 2001, when he released his first solo single, Evergreen. After two more singles, Angel's Tale and Shallow Sleep, HYDE released his first solo album, ballad-filled ROENTGEN, in March 2002. An overseas edition featuring English lyrics was released in July. His next two singles, HELLO and HORIZON, both including a b-side track not found on any album, were released prior to his second album, rockish 666, all in late 2003.
While reuniting with L'Arc~en~Ciel after a 3 year hiatus, HYDE continued his solo career. He composed the music for the song Glamorous Sky, sung by 中島美嘉 (Mika Nakashima) and to be used in the movie NANA. HYDE's next single Countdown was released in October 2005, it included Japanese & English versions of the title song. Another single, Season's Call, was used as the second opening theme to the anime show Blood+, starting in January 2006. The single was released in February. Third album FAITH was released in April, and it can be describes as hard rock with religious touch. The album was accompanied by a five-month tour with many locations in Japan, and four concerts in California, USA. Following the completion of the tour, a DVD of the concerts was released in November.
In addition to his musical career, HYDE has also starred in movies Moon Child and 下弦の月 (Kagen no Tsuki, also known as Last Quarter).
In early 2008, HYDE formed a new unit, VAMPS, with his fellow guitarist K.A.Z – and released a photobook ominously named HYDE IS DEAD.

It saps your strength, it has no exit
The drying wind
The burning sun
I'm tossing the burnt out engine aside
何も無い世界で
何処へ行けばいいのか?
蛇の毒
It's bringing me down
My fever's getting high
踊る死神 all around and around me
月と太陽は it's a regular rat race, yeah
手招く oasis on the distant horizon
蜃気楼かどうか?
I'm feeling dizzy
I'm mesmerized I'm mesmerized
As I light my last cigarette
Diving my fate
あの場所へ
行くべきか?
Or turn away?
答えもない
My fever's getting high
踊る死神 all around and around me
月と太陽は it's a regular rat race, yeah
手招く oasis on the distant horizon
蜃気楼かどうか?
I'm feeling dizzy
I'm mesmerized
眩暈に抱かれ all around and around me
破壊と創造が it's a regular rat race, yeah
手招く oasis on the distant horizon
蜃気楼かどうか?
I'm feeling dizzy
I'm getting mesmerized
The song "Oasis" by Hyde is a reflection on the endless struggles of life and the feeling of being lost in a barren desert, both mentally and physically. The lyrics illustrate a constant struggle against the arduous conditions of the desert, such as the winding roads and the unrelenting sun, while attempting to find a way forward. The use of contrasting imagery, such as the dancing death and the distant oasis, highlights the uncertainty and ambiguity of life's journey. The singer's fever represents the intense emotional turmoil and confusion he experiences as he contemplates his fate, unable to find answers to his questions.
The line "月と太陽は it's a regular rat race" (The moon and sun, it's a regular rat race) emphasizes the never-ending nature of life's journey, where one is in a constant struggle to achieve one's goals. The use of "regular" suggests that this struggle is a common and almost mundane experience. Nevertheless, the singer continues on their journey, captivated by the hand-waving oasis on the horizon, unsure if it's real or a mirage. The song ends with a final question: whether to continue towards the unknown or turn back, without any clear answers.
