Incubus is a five-man alternative rock band formed in 1991, based in Calabasas, California. Members include Brandon Boyd (vocals and percussion), Mike Einziger (guitar), Ben Kenney (bass), Jose Pasillas II (drums) and DJ Chris Kilmore (turntables). Former members of the band include Gavin Koppel (a.k.a. DJ Lyfe) (turntables) and Alex Katunich (a.k.a. Dirk Lance) (bass). The band's name may seem a peculiar choice to fans, as an incubus is a type of demon that, in mythological lore, comes in the night and has sex with women while they are sleeping; it seduces them in their dreams The story behind the name is that the band needed to think of a name hours before their first show and, after a few failed choices, Mike looked in a dictionary and chose "Incubus" almost at random. Mike says that the name was chosen because it sounded silly; Brandon holds that it was chosen because they were teenagers and the definition had the word "sex" in it. "We really didn't want to rape women in their sleep. But, we were fifteen and it seemed harmless to us then, and we never changed it," says the band.
Incubus has received both critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching multi-platinum sales, as well as releasing several successful singles. The band earned mainstream recognition with the release of their 1999 album Make Yourself. In 2001, Incubus became even more successful with the single "Drive" and their follow-up album Morning View. Their sixth studio album, Light Grenades, debuted at No. 1 in 2006 and has received Gold certification in the U.S. Incubus released their first greatest hits album Monuments and Melodies in June 2009, accompanied by a tour of the United States, Japan and Canada. The band's most recent album, 8, was released on April 21st, 2017.

Have You Ever
Incubus Lyrics

So stay and stand your ground, just watch your mouth with me
On the back of every right, there's a wrong looming
So here you and I should tread as soft as these razor blades
For boots will let be
Have you ever tried to step in my shoes?
Have you ever tried to balance that beam?
They'll never be quite as soft as they seemed
(Thought) Unabashed honesty would be ideal
But a prophet did once say that honesty is a lonely word
So where do we go from here, abandon ship now?
My problem is you made me melt
And I don't want to be frozen anymore
Have you ever tried to step in my shoes?
Have you ever tried to balance that beam?
And if you ever tried to fit in my shoes
They'll never be quite as soft as they seemed
Oh, oh, ooh
Have you ever, have you ever tried to?
I have never, I have never tried to
Have you ever tried to step in my shoes?
Have you ever tried to balance that beam?
And if you ever tried to fit in my shoes
They'll never be quite as soft as they seemed
Whoa, yeah, oh now, ha, ha, woo
The opening lines of "Have You Ever" by Incubus speak about the difficulty of walking away from a problematic situation. The singer encourages the other person to stay and face the problem head-on. The line "watch your mouth with me" hints that there has been a disagreement or arguments before, and the situation is tense. The second line talks about how every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Life isn't always fair, and sometimes it's hard to make the right choices. The phrase "razorblades for boots" refers to the difficulty of treading carefully in a hostile environment.
The chorus starts by posing a question to the listener. Have you ever tried to step in someone else's shoes? Have you ever tried to balance the weight of someone else's problems? The line "They'll never be quite as soft as they seem" suggests that the singer is experiencing hardship that is invisible to the outside world. The song continues with the lines "Unabashed honesty would be ideal, But a prophet did once say that honesty's our only weapon." This line is somewhat paradoxical as honesty can be both liberating and destructive. The singer is grappling with a difficult choice and doesn't know what to do. They are torn between staying and fleeing the situation.
Overall, "Have You Ever" is a poignant and introspective song that explores the difficulty of seeing things from someone else's perspective. It's a song about empathy and understanding, and how it's not always possible to walk in someone else's shoes. The lyricist has written a beautiful song that explores some profound themes that are relevant to our everyday lives.
