Incubus is a five-man alternative rock band formed in 1991, based in Calabasas, California. Members include Brandon Boyd (vocals and percussion), Mike Einziger (guitar), Ben Kenney (bass), Jose Pasillas II (drums) and DJ Chris Kilmore (turntables). Former members of the band include Gavin Koppel (a.k.a. DJ Lyfe) (turntables) and Alex Katunich (a.k.a. Dirk Lance) (bass). The band's name may seem a peculiar choice to fans, as an incubus is a type of demon that, in mythological lore, comes in the night and has sex with women while they are sleeping; it seduces them in their dreams The story behind the name is that the band needed to think of a name hours before their first show and, after a few failed choices, Mike looked in a dictionary and chose "Incubus" almost at random. Mike says that the name was chosen because it sounded silly; Brandon holds that it was chosen because they were teenagers and the definition had the word "sex" in it. "We really didn't want to rape women in their sleep. But, we were fifteen and it seemed harmless to us then, and we never changed it," says the band.
Incubus has received both critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching multi-platinum sales, as well as releasing several successful singles. The band earned mainstream recognition with the release of their 1999 album Make Yourself. In 2001, Incubus became even more successful with the single "Drive" and their follow-up album Morning View. Their sixth studio album, Light Grenades, debuted at No. 1 in 2006 and has received Gold certification in the U.S. Incubus released their first greatest hits album Monuments and Melodies in June 2009, accompanied by a tour of the United States, Japan and Canada. The band's most recent album, 8, was released on April 21st, 2017.

When It Comes
Incubus Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
They're letting it out again, again
It's coming around again
They're letting it out again, again
It's coming around again
They're letting it out again, again
It's coming around again
They're letting it out again
When it comes, it comes abrupt
And it feels, it feels like trading brains with an imbecile, for real
Yes, I feel emphatic about not being static
And not buying philosophies that are sold to me at a steal
Just when you thought it was safe to think
In comes mental piracy
I know what I'm looking for cannot be sold to me
I wish they all would stop trying
'Cause what I want (what I want)
And what I need (and what I need)
Is and will always will be free, now
It's coming around again
They're letting it out again, again
It's coming around again
They're letting it out again
When it comes, it comes unannounced
And it feels like a matador is taunting me
With his reddest red cloth and I am the bull
Yes I feel emphatic about not being static
And not eating the bullshit that's being fed to me no more
'Cause now I'm full
Just when you thought it was safe to think
In comes mental piracy
I know what I'm looking for cannot be sold to me
I wish they all would stop trying
'Cause what I want (what I want)
And what I need (and what I need)
Is and will always will be free, now
It's coming around again
They're letting it out again, again
The lyrics of When It Comes by Incubus revolve around the idea of mental piracy and not conforming to the philosophies that are sold to us. The song begins with the repetition of the lines "It's coming around again, they're letting it out again," leading the listener to believe that whatever "it" is, it's recurring and cyclical. This could be interpreted as society's constant cycle of trying to sell us ideologies that we may not necessarily believe in.
The song then goes on to describe the feeling of being forced into a certain way of thinking, likening it to trading brains with an imbecile and being taunted like a bull by a matador. The singer states that they feel emphatic about not being static and not buying into these philosophies that are being sold to them.
The lyric "Just when you thought it was safe to think, in comes mental piracy" implies that even when we feel comfortable with our own thoughts and beliefs, there will always be external forces that try to manipulate and control us. The song ends with the assertion that what the singer wants and needs is and always will be free, and they wish that everyone would stop trying to sell them something they do not want.
Overall, the lyrics of When It Comes encourage the listener to think for themselves and not be swayed by external pressures to conform to certain ideologies.
