Ruins of time

Ruins of time

Blood on the floor in the morning.
Somebody died from someones hand.
Loud were the speeches and warnings
– silent the prayers of the friends.

Small towns they soon become bigger.
This one is smaller this time.
Small was that finger on the trigger
– lonesome that shot in the night.

May all the suffering and all the crime
Just fall like dust on the ruins of time

Some have to grow up in prison.
Can you tell me what it's like
To make up your mind there in prison
With voices that yell: "Never mind!"?

And all that goes on around you
Is tiring and simple as hell
And all that goes on inside you
– what's right or wrong you can't tell.

Freedom is a word without meaning
If you only know it from books.

Some try to find it on the ceiling
With a wire, a chair and a hook.

Overall Meaning

The song Ruins of Time by Instant Poetry is a reflection on the grave consequences of violence and the impact it can have on individuals and their communities. The opening lines of the song paint a vivid image of a crime scene with "Blood on the floor in the morning" and "somebody died from someone's hand". Despite the warnings and speeches, the scene ends with the prayers of the friends who mourn the loss of a life. The lyrics suggest that the ominous silence that follows a crime is almost more deafening than any speech or warning.

The song reflects on the cyclical nature of violence in small towns, where the town may grow larger but the violence remains the same. The finger that pulls the trigger is small in comparison to the devastating impact of the shot, which leaves everyone isolated in their own pain and struggles. The chorus "May all the suffering and all the crime / Just fall like dust on the ruins of time" serves to remind the listener that the tragedy will eventually fade away into history, but it doesn't mean the impact will be forgotten.

The song later shifts its focus to the effects of imprisonment and the eternal struggle of distinguishing between right and wrong. The voices that yell "Never mind!" effectively drown out the inner voice of the singer. The monotony of prison life makes everything "tiring and simple as hell", making it even more difficult to discern what is morally right or wrong. The song suggests that the idea of freedom is abstract and only becomes real when it is taken away. The last verse illustrates the futility of prisoners attempting to find freedom by taking their own lives. The line "Freedom is a word without meaning / If you only know it from books" highlights how freedom is something that must be experienced and not just read about. The imagery of someone trying to find freedom on the ceiling with a wire, a chair, and a hook is a powerful reminder that sometimes people feel so trapped that the only escape they can see is death.
