The group was formed by students at Universidad Técnica del Estado at Santiago, Chile in 1967. In 1973 as they were on tour abroad, General Augusto Pinochet launched a coup d'etat and took power. Having heard of the numerous extra-judicial killings of many fellow artists by Chile's army, they took up residence in Italy, resulting in "the longest tour in history" for Inti-Illimani as they lived in de facto exile. They continued their efforts supporting Chilean democracy internationally; magnitizdat copies of their work continued to be widely distributed in Chile. In September 1988, days after they were no longer banned from Chile, they began touring Chile again. They helped organize the voting down of the referendum that would have re-elected Pinochet. Recently, they were actually supported by Chile as representatives of Chilean culture.
In the past the group was musically led by Horacio Salinas and politically led by Jorge Coulon. However, in 2001 there was a controversial split of the group, which started when three key members left the group (José Seves, Horacio Durán and Horacio Salinas). They were replaced by Manuel Meriño (from Entrama), Cristián González and Juan Flores. Due to the importance of departed members, many called into question the ability of the remainder to carry on the Inti-Illimani name. Meanwhile, the three departed members started their own group they call Inti-Histórico. From 2005 there are two groups:
Inti-Illimani New (Coulon brothers)
Inti-Illimani Histórico (José Seves, Horacio Durán and Horacio Salinas)

y las sombras se irán.
Va a amanecer.
Duro día a vivir
que hace el pan compartir
Pan de unidad.
La secreta canción
cada pecho guardó
Puños del pueblo
van construyendo
anchos caminos de dignidad.
Porque se acerca el final
y muy pronto en tu mano
bandera tendrás
podrás levantarla
muy alto en el aire
por los que no están
y los que lucharon
de pie cantarán
la vida triunfó, la patria vivió,
el pueblo por siempre venció
y siempre vencerá.
Con la espiga y el mar,
el martillo, el telar,
se encontrarán.
Se entreteje el cantar
y renace la flor
voz popular.
De mil pechos vendrá
como sol a alumbrar
la libertad.
Puños del pueblo
van construyendo
anchos caminos de dignidad
Porque se acerca el final
y muy pronto en tu mano
bandera tendrás
podrás levantarla
muy alto en el aire
por los que no están
y los que lucharon
de pie cantarán
la vida triunfó, la patria vivió,
el pueblo por siempre venció
y siempre vencerá.
The song "Alborada vendrá" by Inti-Illimani is a call for hope and unity in the midst of a difficult and oppressive reality. The lyrics speak of the dawn that will come and the shadows that will disappear, bringing a new day and a chance for a better future. The hard day to live is one where people must share the bread of unity and work towards the common good. The secret song that each heart holds is now blossoming and becoming a public declaration of resistance and strength.
The song speaks of the power of the people to build broad paths of dignity and to overcome oppression. The fists of the people are constructing these paths and the people are coming together to weave their collective voice into a powerful force of change. The song also speaks of the symbols of the struggle - the wheat, the sea, the hammer, and the loom - all coming together to create a new reality. The voices of the people will shine like the sun and illuminate the path to freedom.
The final stanza of the song is a call to action, exhorting the listener to be ready to raise the flag of freedom high in the air, to remember those who are no longer there and to honor those who have fought and sacrificed along the way. The lyrics declare that life has triumphed, the homeland has lived, and the people have overcome and will always overcome.
