In 1997 Ismael Serrano signs with Polygram (now Universal) and releases his first disc: “Atrapados en Azul”, with songs such as "Papá cuéntame otra vez", "Vértigo" o "Amo tanto la vida" that became hymns for youngsters in Spain and Latin America. For this work he is nominated as ‘Best revealing author” for the Spanish Musical Awards of the “Sociedad General de Autores y Editores”.
The follow-up disk, "La memoria de los peces" (1998), increases his popularity (sales level for Platinum in Spain, Gold in Argentina). In his third production “Los paraísos desiertos” (2000) new trends can be detected, with Jazz styles and African sounds. Two important music nominations for this work: Best Original Song for the Goya Movie Awards (The “Spanish Oscars”) for the song “Km.0” (of the feature with the same title) and Best Sound Engineering for the Grammy Latin Awards in 2001.
New productions appears in the following years: “La traición de Wendy” (2002), Principio de Incertidumbre” (2003, double live concert disk) and “Naves ardiendo más allá de Orión” (2005), pointing out Ismael Serrano as one of the main exponents of singer/songwriter trend in the Latin music world.
In May 2002 Ismael Serrano participated in his first feature film “El corazón de Jesus”, a german-chilean-bolivaen production written and directed by Marcos Loayza.

Tiernas y ajadas, besos, recuerdos
Aquellas manos, aquella mujer
Aquel invierno no paraba de llover
Perdona que llegue tan tarde
Espero saber compensarte
Estás tan bonita, te invito a un café
La tarde es nuestra, desnúdame
Tras el relámpago te decía
Siempre recogeré flores en tu vientre"
Otro hombre dormirá contigo
Y dará nombre a todos tus hijos
Ven, acércate a mí
¿Me escucharás, me buscarás
Cuando me pierda
Y no señale el norte
La estrella polar?
Las frías mañanas en la facultad
Tú casi siempre huías conmigo al bar
Y me enfadaba si preferías
¿Me escucharás, me buscarás
Cuando me pierda
Y no señale el norte
La estrella polar?
Y la ronquera, los traicioneros nervios
Que me atacaban antes de cada concierto
Viejas canciones, antiguos versos
Y no falta casi nadie
Que hay que apurar
La noche que acaba de empezar
Vértigo, que el mundo pare
Que corto se me hace el viaje
¿Me escucharás, me buscarás
Cuando me pierda
Y no señale el norte
La estrella polar?
The lyrics of "Vértigo" by Ismael Serrano are a reflection on the passage of time, the memories of loved ones who are far away, and the fear of getting lost in the chaos of life. It starts with the singer receiving postcards from overseas, filled with memories, kisses, and tender words of longing. He wonders how everyone is doing, and how time has flown by.
The next stanza reflects on the inevitability of aging, and the hope that when the singer looks at himself in the mirror, he will still recognize the person he is now. He remembers a past love, and apologizes for being late. He praises her beauty and invites her for a coffee, expressing his desire to be intimate with her. But he also knows that another man will one day take his place, and that he will be left alone.
The song ends with a sense of hope and renewal, as the singer looks forward to being a good friend and not betraying those who have been there for him. He wants to leave the vertigo behind and embrace the light of a new day.
Overall, "Vértigo" is a poignant and reflective song that captures the universal feelings of longing, love, and loss.
