Honey child what can I do
Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That takes you miles above, yeah it's called love
Would you do it for me?
'Cause I'm feeling lonely
Praying, hoping, and I leave the door wide open
I see you and you catch your spill
But come and sit by me
Maybe I'm a stupid fool
Chasing butterflies like you
On these days they seem so cruel
But honey child, what can I do?
Maybe I'm a stupid fool
Chasing butterflies like you
On these days they seem so cruel
But honey child, what can I do?
Honey child, what can I do
The lyrics of "Honey child what can I do" convey a sense of vulnerability and longing for love. The singer is lonely and wishes for someone to come and be with them. They hope for that old familiar feeling of being in love that can lift them up and take them miles above. They plead with the listener to do it for them because they are feeling lonely.
The second verse continues with the same theme, with the singer praying and hoping for someone to come into their life. They leave the door open, hoping that this person will come in, but they catch their spill, indicating that there have been unsuccessful attempts or disappointments in the past. Despite this, the singer still urges the listener to come and sit by them because they are feeling lonely.
The chorus shows that the singer recognizes that they might appear foolish for chasing after love, particularly someone who is elusive like a butterfly. They acknowledge that some days can be cruel, but still they ask the question, "honey child, what can I do?" - a plea for help or guidance in their search for love.
Overall, this song conveys a sense of vulnerability, longing, and hope. It captures the universal experience of seeking love, and the ups and downs that come with it.
