Come On Over
Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Crawling through the night
Like a drunk
Brawling in a fight
How she gonna know what is
Right from wrong
[Chorus]
Sunday best
You're my favorite suit
You make the team
You're no substitute
I know baby I'm your
Favorite son, listen up babe
[Chorus]
Is it any wonder
Is it any wonder
I lay awake all night
Is it any wonder
On a Sunday soon
I see the light
Tell me baby
Tell me pretty lies
See the spider
Been out catching flies
Will you leave me I know it
Won't be long before you
[Chorus]
Is it any wonder
Is it any wonder
I lay awake all night
Is it any wonder
On a Sunday soon
I see the light
Like a blind man
Driving at the wheel
Like a hound dog
Scratching out a meal
You and I both know it
You belong
[Chorus]
The lyrics to "Come On Over Turn Me On" by Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan explore the idea of temptation and desire. The first verse gives us the imagery of a thief and a drunk, both acting impulsively and recklessly. The lyrics question how one can know what is right and wrong in these situations. The chorus, "Come on over, turn me on," suggests that the singer is willing to give in to their desires and succumb to temptation.
The second verse continues the theme of temptation with the lyrics "Sunday best, you're my favorite suit, you make the team, you're no substitute." The singer is conveying their strong attraction to this person, suggesting that they stand out above the rest. The line "I know baby I'm your favorite son" may imply that the singer feels they have a special connection with this person.
The bridge of the song, "Is it any wonder, I lay awake all night, is it any wonder, on a Sunday soon I see the light," suggests that the singer is struggling with their desires and the consequences of giving in. They may be losing sleep over the decision, but also have a glimmer of hope, a "light," that they may finally give in to their desires.
Overall, this song is a seductive and moody exploration of human desire and temptation.

I heard this on rescue me and had to look up the song right afterwards. I loved it after the first few lines. Very mellow and addicting. I love the lyrics too.

Wow! Back in '95 I briefly lived in a 3000' recording studio built by the drummer, Jeff, an Airforce Acoustic Engineer, and the guitarist, Mark. They turned me onto Mad Season, The Burning Red. Which, of course, led me to Screaming Trees. Then and again, Wow. Seattle's one of the few major cities I haven't seen yet. Keep on writin brother.
