I Love You
Jackie Gleason Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm in the mood for love
Simply because you're near me.
Funny, but when you're near me
I'm in the mood for love.

Heaven is in your eyes
Bright as the stars we're under
Oh! Is it any wonder
I'm in the mood for love?

Why stop to think of whether
This little dream might fade?
We've put our hearts together
Now we are one, I'm not afraid!

If there's a cloud above
If it should rain we'll let it

But for tonight, forget it!
I'm in the mood for love

Overall Meaning

The song "I'll Be Seeing You" is a classic love ballad of the 1940s, written by Irving Kahal and composer Sammy Fain. The lyrics evoke emotions of longing and yearning for someone who is not physically present, yet ever-present in the mind's eye. The singer states that they will see their loved one in all the familiar places that their heart holds dear - the small cafe, the park, the children's carousel, the chestnut trees, and the wishing well. Each of these places holds a special memory, a connection to the person that the singer is addressing.

The singer then goes on to state that they will find their beloved in every lovely summer's day, in everything that is light and gay. The imagery that is used here is significant. The summer days represent warmth and happiness, a time when life is at its most exuberant. The lyrics also highlight the idea that the singer will always think of their loved one in a positive light, always seeing them as the bright, joyful person they know them to be.

The final verse of the song is a repetition of the first, but with slight differences. The singer states that they will find their love in the morning sun and when the night is new. This is a reflection of the cyclical nature of time, and how the love between two people can be eternal. The moon, a symbol of mystery and allure, is mentioned again, with the singer stating that they will be looking at it, but they will be seeing their beloved instead. The song is ultimately one about eternal love and the power of the mind to conjure up memories and emotions long after a person is gone.

God Bless Jackie Gleason.

You are so right about Jackie. No one can touch him when it comes to romantic mood music. The man seemed to record every worthwhile song ever written. His music puts one in the finest mood. It is a shame that this type music is no longer appreciated by the masses.
