Gleason could not read or write music in a conventional sense; he was said to have conceived melodies in his head and described them vocally to staff help. He did likewise with the well-remembered themes of both The Jackie Gleason Show ("Melancholy Serenade") and The Honeymooners ("You're My Greatest Love"). There has been some controversy over the years as to how much credit Gleason should have received for the finished products; it has been written that beyond the possible conceptualizing of many of the songs, Gleason had no direct involvement such as conducting in the making of these recordings. However, his main musical companion, cornetist and trumpeter Bobby Hackett once said: "Jackie knows a lot more about music than people give him credit for. I have seen him conduct a sixty-piece orchestra and detect one discordant note in the brass section. He would immediately stop the music and locate the wrong note. It always amazed the professional musicians how a guy who technically did not know one note from another could do that. And he was never wrong."

Each kiss is magic that makes my little world a Shangri-La
A land of bluebirds and fountains and nothing to do
But cling to an angel that looks like you
And when you hold me, how warm you are
Be mine, my darling, and spend your life with me in Shangri-La
For anywhere you are is Shangri-La
Each kiss is magic that makes my little world a Shangri-La
A land of bluebirds and fountains and nothing to do
But cling to an angel that looks like you
And when you hold me, how warm you are
Be mine, my darling, and spend your life with me in Shangri-La
For anywhere you are is Shangri-La
The lyrics of the song "Shangri-La" by Jackie Gleason describe the power of love and the way it can transport someone to a state of blissful happiness. The name Shangri-La refers to a fictional place in the novel "Lost Horizon" by James Hilton, which is depicted as a paradise or utopia. The first verse of the song talks about how each kiss from the person he loves takes him to Shangri-La, a mystical land of bluebirds and fountains where there is nothing to worry about but holding onto his angelic lover. The second verse emphasizes how warm and comforting the person's embrace is and asks them to spend their life in Shangri-La together. The chorus repeats the sentiment that anywhere the person is, it is Shangri-La.
The lyrics of this song are full of imagery that emphasizes the magical, almost dreamlike feeling of being in love. The repetition of the phrase "Shangri-La" emphasizes the way that love can transport someone to a paradise-like state. Additionally, the image of bluebirds and fountains emphasizes the idyllic nature of this place, where there are no worries or concerns. The ultimate message of the song is that love can transform even the most mundane or stressful existence into a utopia, as long as you have the person you love by your side.
