These days I replayed this game for the mere fun of doing so, I remember the gameplay being very entertaining (and so it was).
However, as the final scene occured, I felt a big pressure in my chest. I swear if I had put more thought into it, I would have cried right there.
Was it the nostalgia? The feeling of something good coming to an end? Or the accomplishment?
I don't really know. But I am sure that this game has a lot more emotion put into it than I thought.
I keep getting emotional every time I remember about Shovel and Shield knight's reencounter.
This game will always have a special spot in my heart. <3

Mar the embodiment of vengeance theme lyrics
You don't know what I've been through
So much pain and despair in my heart it's so heavy and dead
I have nothing to do without you watching over me
I can't remember when I watched you leave
How it torn my heart in a thousand pices
But I became numb to the pain far worse than you shovel knight
Ohhhhhhh~
*Jams out *
I can't see how much pain I went through
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh~!
The end

This may be one of the greatest gameplay-story integration moments ever. There's no need to catch Shield Knight. No reward, no secret golden ending.
But Shovel Knight has to catch her. And in this moment... you're him.

Honestly didn't let her fall in any of the sequences where you had to catch shield knight, this theme just sends chills all over my body. Even when the enemies where swarming me I was like "Fuck the enemies, I HAVE to catch her."
JacobSonic03
True XD.
ImVeryHongry
I would do the same, but I knew I had time to just pick off a few enemies

Me : oh shit It’s the dream sequence again! Ok who cares about shield knight what do I use to get as much money as humanly possible.

This is a scene where narrative and gameplay work perfectly together.

The music alone really conveys the bond and story of Shield Knight and Shovel Knight. It has such a desperate, lonely feel.
I can't be the only one who got teary in that final campfire scene.

+AetherSolace During my "NG++" challenge, I actually "died" in the last dream sequence when she just got on screen about to hit the ground. To me, that brief instant held some symbolism: the fight gets harder and harder, and Shovel Knight fears that there will come a time where it's too much and he won't be there to catch her.
